percyk Posted July 18, 2010 Share Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) i love polar fleece like most of you guys do but some time ago i saw a program about the use of formaldehyde in making fabric cuddly- soft and helping prevent mold and mildew from growing on it when it is being stored and exported it is of course made in china and it has been linked to rashes allergies respiratory illness and cancer i just read an article about someone suffering mysterious rashes when wearing victoria secrets lingerie which is made in china and this prompted my memory in regards to all these lovely soft fabrics like polar fleece and mink blankets and possible side effects i use woollen blankets for my dogs but i allow them to wear the polar fleece coats...my dogs are young and i have had no problems with them but im wondering if perhaps with time all our cossetted pets will end up with health problems i know many of these things we hear come from scaremongers ....but still.. that ' newclothes smell' creeps me out nonetheless..maybe it is best to wash polar fleece before allowing pets to wear it or sleep on it? dont know if it makes a difference... i hate that we are victims of these silent threats around us...no matter how hard you try to protect yourself and your family and pets....theres always something out there that you dont know about what you all reckon? I really would be more concerned about the effects of diet and feeding commercial pet foods with multiple chemicals etc than what they wear in the cold... remembering that dogs do have fur to protect their skin... for them to absorb toxins from a polar fleece coat, it would have to be a huge amount and it would have to be able to seep through their fur and skin to even begin to be absorbed into their blood stream or organs.. My advice.. stop reading articles about random stuff causing cancer when there is absolutely no proof to back it up and no explanation as to how the cancer is caused. :rolleyes: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Souff always understood that formaldehyde was on all new clothes, blankies, etc and that it stayed there until you washed the things. Seeing as there are polar fleece dog blankets in the washing machine here every other day, about the only thing that is going to get cancer from it is the cockroaches in the sewers cos that is where the formaldehyde ends up. percyk Posted July 18, 2010 Author Share Posted July 18, 2010 yeah i know there are a lot of articles out there Cordelia but we also know about china and its sins .... i was also hoping that the fur might protect the skin...but i still dont think id be giving it to little puppies..you know all that stuff about them being young and growing ive heard that kids shouldnt wear all that kiddy jewellery,...all that bling stuff made in china..cos theyre growing too... youre right ...i know if we took everything seriously...everything we read that is...wed be in a corner sitting catatonically lol still makes you wonder...these things might indeed be having a cumulative effect Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I very firmly believe that if you get cancer, you were always going to get it regardless of what you do to prevent it. Animals are the same... though I do believe that the food we feed them (and ourselves and our kids) plays an important role in 'activating' cancer cells later in life.. Better start thinking about moving to a nudist camp in the tropics, but then again the crocs and malaria laden mosquitoes would probably eat me before the cancerous cells could multiply ..... My Mum won't have anything plastic in the house.... all the appliances, storage containers, sinks, baths, crockery etc - none of it is plastic. She is convinced that plastic causes cancer. She purposely buys things that come in glass containers and if it does come in plastic, it doesn't stay in it! I also once heard that cheezles weren't allowed into the UK as they are said to be cancer causing... I'm pretty sure all the make up, skin products, smoking, drinking etc that we do is going to be more harmful than polar fleece. I use polar fleece blankets for the pooch, because they are easy to wash and fast drying. As for her clothes, cotton all the way.... I don't like her getting all sweaty! Last year, I bought my little boy some fleecy pyjamas. He was very excited about them and so I let him wear them before the first wash. What a mistake! We ended up in emergency, his whole body swelled, he came up in a red rash that was so bad it was bruising underneath. He looked so bad :p The docs said it was an allergic reaction and the pyjamas (made in China) were the only thing different he had come in contact with. I bought some cheap polar fleece rugs from Coles the other weeka nd threw them out because the smell was very strong (even after two washes). Edit: and personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with not being 100% trusting of manufacturers. 20 years ago if someone posed a question about lead in petrol I'm sure they would be told "stop beiong a nervous nelly, everything is bad for you". It is broken down by sunlight and bacteria and is quickly decomposed by metabolic processes in the human body. It accumulates in neither the animal body nor the environment. A wash and drying outside in the sun should soon remove all formaldehyde from clothing.
