Liver

I know giving to much liver to dogs is not good for them but I was wondering how much liver could I give per day to a dog around 19 kilos. Could he safely have 25-30g a day with no ill effect?

It is to make him eat his food with joint guard in it, story here

I could have asked this question in one of the other threads but I thought doing a separate thread would get me a more varied response as not everyone goes back to read threads they have already replied in.

Hoping someone will be able to help.

Thanks for the heads up, will check it out. I havent tried directly onto his food as he has dry mostly and he usually doesnt eat the whole lot in one go, my thought is that it would go to the bottom of the bowl and there is no way he woudl lick it out? So im still looking for a fool proof way to get him to eat it. Tonight I manged to get a whole 5mg dose in with his dry soaked in a bit of water and I mixed in some cooked (boiled liver) If only I could give him liver every night, not ideal I know but it is his ultimate favorite food.

tlc, if the liver works and he likes it why don't you try making up some stock by simmering some liver (and perhaps a little chicken or beef) in water, then mixing the joint guard in with the liquid and through his dry food. That way he'll still get the taste without over doing it

Oh I just seen this reply in the other thread, thats a really good idea, I don't know why I didn't think of it my self, I could maybe leave a few morsals of the actual liver in it for a bit more taste, you know all the crumby bits you get when you boil it up!

My approx 20kg dogs always get about 25gms of cooked liver a day to flavour their BARF veges. I have done this for years with no ill affects. A small amount regularly is very good for them.

Just remember not to give liver treats on top of this amount, any more than about once a week.

Oh thanks so much, It has been working a treat for the last couple of nights, tiny amount of liver mushed up with water and add his EP and the 5mg or joint guard and he has eaten the whole thing. I think I will definatley use SecretKeis suggestion and next time I cook the liver I will use some of the water it is cooked in and that can be the liquid amount I mix the JG into.

edited to add, I dont use liver treats much but if he had any I only use like thumb nail size bits if I have a few on me when we go out and about.

Yes someone mentioned them in the other thread, I did think I might try them but if he doesn't like them I'll be stuck with them and I don't want to have to force him to have them. I know I am making a big thing of this who dilemma but seriously you have no idea what this boy can be like re food, it has been an on going drama his whole life.

Now I have finally found a way to keep him healthy without to much hassle and now to have to stuff around with getting him to have the JG is just a pain. But I want to do it and do it as painlessly as possible for him and for me!!

If he was my dog, I would feed him cooked beef liver once a week.
