Reaction To Injections

The dog use to get a huge lump on the back of her neck when she had her vaccinations. Went away after a few weeks - thought it was a reaction to the vaccination you read about. Well not really as she's gotten older its now been a reaction to the fourth of the weekly cartrophan and now its to the third and fourth. And then when she had I assume an antibiotic shot when she had her teeth cleaned came up in a huge lump again that started to reduce after a week.

Would appear its the actual needle jab rather than whats in it that she reacts too - its this a common thing that some dogs skin reacts badly to being a pin cushion?

My bitch had a reaction to the rabies Injection with a solid lump and it has never disappeared, she is lighter than the male who has had no reaction at all. Can the vet massage the area after the injection or use a different place ?

Orbit's had a couple of lumps come up after different injections. I guess it's possible your dog just doesn't react well to trauma? Do you know if your vet uses a new sterile syringe from a packet for injections are are they washed and reused?

I usually ask for tany injections to be given over the ribcage on their right hand side.

I can't remember seeing any who reacted to any injection it was normally to vaccinations or something in particular.

I get them done on my dogs necks because if they do get the lump, I want it hidden by lots of hair.

These sort of site reactions happen regularly with certain vets. The way they inject can cause a higher incidence of lumps. My normal vets seem to get it right and we rarely have any swelling or lumps come up, but it does happen when we use a different vet.

I used to inject my horse on a frequent basis with Cartrophen shots, when he was in full work. I remember the Vet telling me to be careful about getting any of the cartrophen just under the skin, as that would cause a lump. I used to make sure there was no Cartrophen on the surface of the needle (after loading) before injecting and also that the full amount from the injection had been injected before I carefully withdrew the needle from the injection site. Don't know if that's the reason I never had any problems, but I never did.

Several people have put various injections in (cartrophan, antibiotics, vaccinations) and as she's gotten older it seems she is just more sensitive - lucky for her she has lots of loose skin and hair around the back of her neck so while we can feel it she doesnt seem too fussed.

Just wondered if others had had similar issues as none of the family dogs ever ended up with a needle site reaction. But then she also has skin reactions to insect bites (which had to be treated with salt water bathing), swelling in her throat from a sting from a bug (expensive home vet visit and now has antihistamines if it ever happens again), got an infection from walking into a stick at the park that stabbed her leg - hardly a graze but enough to need antibiotics within a few days, then she had the small lump that came up under her eye like a pimple (at least that healed without treatment) and then theres the wart she's had for 6 years and the more recent lumps that give the indication of being fatty lumps in the skin (well the two that were removed were and the others to be monitored have the appearance of hopefully being the same).

Maybe dogs were bred to be tougher in the 80s and 90s!!
