Puppy Vomitted 3 Hrs After Worming Tablet

Recommended Posts

I gave Oscar his worming tablet today. He then vomitted about 3 hrs later due to car sickness. Does anyone know how long it takes for them to be absorbed? I'm worried that the tablet might have come back up. It was a flavoured tablet and I am pretty sure it got chewed a little bit before he swallowed it, if that helps...

I'd wait a week and then give him another one. A week delay won't matter too much and will reduce the change of upsetting his tummy if he did digest the first one. I doubt three hours is long enough to have digested enough to be effective.

Did you see pieces of the tablet in the vomit?

I would give it again in 2-3 days just to be sure. Most worming tablets these days are only work for about 24 hrs so it should be safe. Was it drontal?

Check with the vet - a few years ago I gave the dog antibiotic tablet and an hour later she threw up. He said after about 30 minutes its gone so not to worry. Therefore seek advice before dosing again

If your dog is old enough to be beyond the initial "puppy wormer routine" stage and unless you have good reason to believe your dog has or was likely to have picked up worms, I wouldn't worry about a missed dose.

In fact, I don't worm my dog at all on a regular basis. I sometimes take stool samples to the Vet if I think it is necessary and have them check it for worm burden. I'm disinclined to administer worm drugs on the frequent schedule science has had us believe is necessary "just in case".

That's me.

Thanks everyone for the advice!

I didn't see any pieces in the vomit, but then again it was dark. It was the Purina Allwormer tablets. I usually use drontal, but my mum had some of the purina ones already, so I just used those.

He is currently on a monthly worming routine.

Tend to agree with erny - ours gets her monthly heartworm tablet (which is for heartworms only) and maybe twice a year if that gets an allwormer from the vet. Likewise flea treatments shes never been treated for fleas yet you read about some dogs that are treated as a routine not because anything has infested them.
