Advice For Feeding Evening Meal

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi there, We have an 8 month old boxer who still wakes at about 4AM to go to the toilet. He has a poo and a wee then. If for some reason I don''t hear him as soon as he heads downstairs ( he sleeps on his bed in our room) he will go on the floor at the door. There is no option of a doggy door. I am wondering if I fed him his evening meal earlier, right now he gets it about 7pm, would he be likely to need to poo earlier? I do have a crate which we sometimes use during the day. I was also wondering if he slept in his crate would he have to hold on more? I am hoping to sleep a little later than 4am soon!!

Thanks

To me it just sounds like this is now his routine, if you crate him overnight you can slowly shift his routine to start his day later in the morning, if you are finding that he soils his crate then there may be a medical issue, but Id try leaving him in the crate for a little while longer at first to see if that works

As goldengirl85 says, sounds like his routine so you will have to slowly change it, 4.15am, 4.30am etc. Also maybe feed his evening meal earlier, say 5pm and make sure he has had a poo etc before you put him to bed. My dogs get up at 4.30am as we milk cows but dont mind a sleep in if we get a day off so maybe as he gets older he will learn to hang on longer as well. Good luck

Sounds like me... she usually stirs around 6am. Some days a little earlier, some days a little later. It is usually still dark, so I heat up another hot water bottle (or turn the heater on) and she goes back to sleep.
