redangel
Im sitting here in tears- I tripped over a cord and dropped my d90. It had my 50mm 1.4 on it. On inspection the hoya filter was cracked- visibly everthing else sems ok but I going to get it serviced and looked at because who knows what has happened. Depressed is a word for it-I feel like I have let my best friend down. Edited July 17, 2010 by redangel

Kirislin
Oh! you poor thing of course you deserve sympathy! It was an accident, we all make them. Have you tried to use the camera or are you too scared? I've seen a few threads on POTN where people drop their cameras and the filter saved the lens. I hope yours isn't damaged, fingers crossed everything is OK.

kja
Go ahead and check to see if things are still working. Cameras and lenses can be tougher than we give them credit for - you might be happily surprised! <hugs> I feel for ya!
Firestone
I can only imagine you pain but if it was me I think they would hear me screaming in Queensland. Hope all is ok
rubiton
Throw away the broken filter and just buy a new one (thats what filters are for to savew the lens). Then take the camera and lens out and try it on something such as the dogs or cars driving down a road or anything. Just because you dropped it doesnt mean its broken unless it doesnt work properly. Its such a hassle taking them to get fixed why waste the time if it actuslly ends up being ok when you try it.

redangel
Thanks guys......I removed the broken filter, wrapped my baby and took it down to the manager of the camera shop. He cleaned the minute pieces of glass from the thread of the lens, and inspected the camera/mirror inside. Then we tested it out- it seems fine! No noise,no visible damage...he says the filter was the best insurance I had- it had don its job well. The prime lens having metal thread/body metal thread has obviously taken the brunt of the impact. it was nose down when I found it. He asked with a cheeky smile....will that be another filter youd be after!!!!!!!! Apparently he finds filters a hard sell- people budget for a camera and then think he is just milking them when he suggests filters- go figure. Anyway im feeling better after the painkiller and coffees. I cannot tell you how muchof a fright I got seeing my precious camera flying from my hands in slow motion-just awful. Anyway I am optimistic it is ok.

becandcharch
Glad to hear all was ok. I dropped my 40D on the driveway last week. From hip height I felt sick as I inspected it. The lens filter was smashed but my 50mm and camera were ok. Never ever ever will I carry it without the strap around my neck again
redangel
There is nothing that describes the anguish you feel when you remove the lenscap and see a shattered filter is there? Been there now, never want to revisit that feeling.... Trust us when we say 'Dont try that at home" ;)

GregW
After reading this i think i need to get one. Question, those that do have, are you leaving it on all the time to avoid accidental hits even when you are shooting indoors or out of direct light? and how about for your pro shots? anniek
I have a filter permanently attahed to my 100mm macro because it was an expensive lens and I use it a lot at the beach for action shots, which involve a lot of sand in and around my face

redangel
Well thats three as they say! My filters are on all the time, from time of purchase. Having had the mishap...Im sticking to em! My first incident was when I first got the camera and my Luci decided to headbutt the new 200mm lens.
