After coverting my friend's fantastic DSLRs for years, I have finally taken the plunge myself.

I have just bought a Pentax K-7 with a Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC - its came with a free Sigma 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 UC Asp lens as well. I have had the SLR like point and shoots for a while, but they just weren't doing what I needed and I was getting frustrated by the automatic nature to them! However, I don't know anything about apatures and lenses etc, so I'm think I probably need to do a beginners course. Does anyone know of anything like that in Melbourne, preferably in the inner west?

Thanks!

Here is website of Melbourne Camera Club in South Melbourne. There is also one in Flemington if that is closer to you. Where is inner west?

The Camera Clubs (Photographic Societies) probably offer the best value-for-money courses for beginner members, generally either free or a token payment. And it doessn't cost anything to go to a couple of meetings first to meet people and see what you think of it before joining. Membership is around $50 a year, it varies a bit from club to club.

I saw your work is doing a big expansion and recruitment tonight - you might get a promotion if you aren't careful!LOL

I've asked for info - will let you know as soon as I do! But this is what they have on their site:

Learn to produce pictures not snapshots.

Twice each year the Melbourne Camera Club conducts a series of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions for people with digital and 35mm SLR cameras. Led by specialist photographers, these courses attract many beginning photographers as well as those who are more experienced but who have not had the benefit of any formal photographic training.

The first course each year commences on the first Tuesday in February, the second course commences on the first Tuesday in August. Each course is conducted over a six-week period; there are six lessons (held at the MCC clubrooms in South Melbourne on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 pm until 9.00pm) and three practical workshops (in different locations, on Sunday mornings from 9.30am until noon).

The $300 course fee includes all nine sessions, comprehensive course notes and six months provisional membership of the Melbourne Camera Club entitling participants to attend all club activities.

Syllabus Outline

1. Tuesday - Introduction, cameras and film, basics of exposure

2. Sunday - Understanding camera controls - practical workshop

3. Tuesday - Photographic lighting

4. Sunday - Photography outdoors - workshop and excursion

5. Tuesday - Photographic composition

6. Tuesday - Portraits and people

7. Sunday - Composition and outdoor portraits - workshop and excursion
