3Woofs
Hi All, My Amstaff keeps jumping on our colorbond fence whenever people/other animals walk past, lawnmowers starting, postman..... pretty much anytime he gets excited. Three times now he has popped the panels out and has gotten out of the yard. I've tried squirting him with the hose when he does it and also yelling "NO" at him but he just ignores me until I physically grab him which is yard because he thinks it's a big game and keeps dodging me. So I'm looking at what I can do to stop him having contact with the fence. I'm wondering if just a stock electric fence/hot tape would work or whether a containment system with collar would be the way to go?? A std electric fence would be a lot cheaper but I wonder if he wouls just learn to jump on the panels above or below where the wire is?? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Parkeyre
I have a radio collar electric fence. my bitch can't get within 1.5metres of the wire or her collar will beep it's warning. 50cms closer and she'll be shocked. Which means she can't jump our 6 foot fences anymore She's the one in my signature. :p Edited July 15, 2010 by Bonnie Parker
Nekhbet
go the hot tape, put it in 3 strings and about a meter away from the fence. They learn very quickly and no need for a collar or burying wires
Steve K9Pro
K9: There are a number of problems with electric fences that should be considered, one is that they are mostly designed to stop horses, so are designed to deter multi hundred kilo animals. Another is that the tape the animal touches uses the dogs central nervous system to complete the circuit to ground, the containment system doesnt do this. Another is that, outsiders can touch the tape, if they do in many cases you can be sued if they are zapped and finally no matter how many strands of tape you use, a dog that is aware that the tape causes the correction can jump over or dig under (avoid) the tape and then can escape just the same. Here is an article that can help...

That's all and fine until you have a dog that sits in the "beep" zone to flatten the battery then still gets out. Don't laugh, I had it. I had the retailers of the k9 collar come out and see for themselves they did not believe me.
