Laps Around Kitchen At Dinner Time

OK this is a random question to satisfy my curiousity - when we are preparing the dinner for the dogs, Hannah, our golden retriever, sees the food and does laps around the house ; three or four times, until we put the dishes down. Any ideas why? Is it just impatience or is this some ancient instinct dogs have?

Excitement.

I make Genevieve sit, as she tries to beat me into the cupboard to get the food, then into the drawer to get the scales.... and on and on it goes!

And if she doesn't sit, I stop moving... she quickly sits again. She knows it will take longer to eat if she goes too mental!!!

They are funny little things though! Anyone would think they never get fed the way they carry on!

One of my boys does this each day when I get home from work.

As soon as I come in the door, he trots a lap of the house, them comes to touch my hand then another lap and so on. Does up to about 10 laps :D Very cute! It's just his way of showing his excitement.

Kaisie laps the kitchen/family room.

She usually waits patiently before the morning feed, but afternoons she will lap as soon as she thinks dinner is on the way. If dinner is running late, she lets us know all about it! Lapping the room, targetting chairs, "talking" to to DH (who does the night feed) and if that does not work, she comes to me and literally tells on him for not feeding her. :drink:

If we move the funiture around, she thinks for a bit and works out a new route. Doesn't stop her for long.

If she thinks she's getting an outing in the car, she laps. And laps. As soon as the collar and lead appear, she walks straight into it.

I would say it is excitment.

If i am preparing human dinner, he has to be at my feet hoping to pick up any scraps that might fall to him. But if it is his dinner, he has learnt that he has to be patient. He sits quietly at the kitchen door waiting for his food, as soon as i pick up his bowl he runs to his play pen (where he gets fed) and plants his bum there. I then tell him to 'leave it' put his bowl down and step away, he looks from me to the bowl to me again and only once i say 'Take it' is he allowed to eat.

He learnt quickly that this is the way to do it, as otherwise mum takes too long stopping all the time to him to get out of the kitchen or sit down etc. :)
