A New Zealand man is recovering in hospital after his dog shot him in the backside by jumping on a loaded rifle.

The 40-year-old man, from the northern town of Te Kopuru, was sitting in the back seat of a four-wheel-drive when the dog stepped on the trigger, the New Zealand Herald reports.

The man was rushed to hospital and had surgery to remove the bullet.

He remains in a stable condition.

The man had been returning from a pig hunting trip with friends when the accident happened.

The bolt action rifle had been used during the hunting trip but the group told police they thought it had been unloaded

Has he not heard of the safety? Or removing ammo from the gun???

Makes you wonder when it sounds like he is a person that goes pig hunting. The "group" and probably the indivdual should at least know basic firearm safety.

Seems his dog may be the smart one of that relationship.
