Someone Close To Me Is A Puppymiller

I have a family friend that I speak to on odd occasion, see them maybe once a month, but we know each other well and are good friends.

she has a farm property she's moved to sometime in March, but as they're more my Dad's friends than mine, I haven't visited yet.

Last night I went over to visit my parents, as I do on occasion, and her daughter was there for a visit. They talked about small things, gossip, finance, family business, and then they started talking about pets, then dogs. My mother has been researching the idea of a whippet for some time and raves to everyone about her chosen breeder and the lines she wants it from, and then the daughter piped up with a "Oh, they're too expensive, and crossbreds are healthier". My mum is, thankfully, an anti-BSL supporter and very in the know about dog stuff, so she stepped in and explained about the hybrid vigour myth, why pures were healthier if bought from a real breeder, and gave an example about health issues in labradoodles.

Then the daughter says something about how her mum's cross dogs are way healthy and they only needed to take the pups to the vet but the parents were healthy.

Neither of us knew she had dogs or puppies or we would have offered advice {they're a fairly clueless family dog-wise} and it comes out that her Mum has a cavoodle bitch and a poodle dog that she's been breeding as often as she can and selling the puppies online, in the trading post and selling to pet stores.

When it comes to animal welfare, especially dogs, my mum is a loudmouth, so she spent a good hour argueing with this daughter about why it was bad and it ended up the daughter saying that's how the bills are paid so they're going to keep doing it, and they kept two bitches from the last litter and are buying a poodle boy off the TP soon to continue.

and how they're kept in kennels and fed and watered and have their coats washed once a month so it's not abuse, despite her already pumped out three litter from October last year.

My mum is in the right mood to march down to the RSPCA now and get them clapped in chains but we're not sure there's anything we can do legally since they are vouched for being well cared for

At least your Mum is knowledgable and was willing to set her straight. Legally I don't think there is much you can do though - to a point she is right; if the dogs have shelter, food and water then by RSPCA standards it not abuse. Registered breeders have a hell of a lot more restrictions on them than PF's/BYB's unfortunately.

This type of thing would probably end a friendship for me...

Surely there must be something you can do considering the poor dogs had 3 litters within a year. If you have proof.

It is impossible for a bitch to have 3 litters in the space of one year, lol. Bitches come into season twice a year, most of the time it is spaced 7-8 mths apart!

I've owned a bitch who came in season every 3 months, it is perfectly possible.

I honestly cannot see how breeding one bitch would hardly suffice to keep the bills paid. It all sounds too strange to me somehow  .

Some bitches may come into season quarterly but they are not fertile when this is the case, sorry but I have never heard of a bitch producing 3 litters in a year. No can do, lol

They said since Oct 09. That is NOT even 1 year. It is 9 months. 3 litters in 9 months - CRAP.

Oh dear, mine was an odd one because she was fertile - at least on the single occasion she was mated 2 seasons in a row (yes, 3 months apart), and if you want to know why I did this PM me.

ETA: but I would be very surprised if a bitch managed to have 3 litters in 9 months.

If she had a litter on the ground in October last year, text book says she'd be back in season about 4 months after that, whelped in 9 weeks and back in another four months later, give or take a few days . She could quite possibly be back in whelp again, if she cycles every 6 months.

If she's a bitch that cycles more often than that ( I've got one who goes every 4.5 months and I've had one who cycles every four months ), then it's entirely possible to be pumping out litter after litter in that short amount of time.

I'm only repeating what her daughter said. I'm not a breeder and don't know the possibility of breeding three litters in 10 months, I am only repeating what was said.

It is entirely possible for her to be mistaken about the number of litters, the daughter doesn't live with her and possibly didn't get the full story either. It's likely if she's this morally decrepit to breed a dog into the ground that she's pulled the wool over more than one pair of eyes about her "business"

The friendship is well gone, Mum's furious, in a total black fit of rage. She shot her off a huge email tearing her a new one and then deleted her from everything she had her in. I'll say one thing, my Mum's a stickler for having a temper!

I think she wanted an Ibiza whippet, but she said something about 'black whippet' {not referring to a colour, to a breeder}. I'm not a Whippet person, although I do like the breed, so hopefully there's someone here who knows what I'm talking about

Sad to know there's nothing we can do except never talk to her again, but thanks for the help

Ibiza is a breeder prefix. The breeder specialises in solid coloured dogs and does breed blacks. His website is www.blackwhippet.com

Anyone with a bitch that can whelp 3 times a year best give me a call at Deshonko. I can always use some of those.

Cheque book's ready to go.

:p

Oh, put the Deshonko cheque book away PF :p

Pounds to pennies there is more than 1 bitch on the property and the spokesperson was not telling all.

Some Councils will take some steps...eg knock on the door and want to check that each dog is registered and that the person who has bred more then one litter is registered with the Council (Local not CCC) - if nothing else they'll have to pay rego and possibilty a small fine? (Brisbane do this...well...is supposed to do this...lol)
