Changing Puppy Food

Hi guys I put up a post regarding my hyperactive puppy, and after going to puppy school today the trainer said it may be due to her diet, she explained that Eukanuba can sometimes cause your puppy to be hyperactive, has anyone else had this problem? and could recommend a good dry puppy food brand to switch to.

I've never heard that before but i suppose it is possible your dog is reacting to somehting iin the diet. You could try royal canin, advance or science diet as these are premium foods also. You might want to change to a raw diet, perhaps there are too many carbs in the dry food.

Aren't most puppies hyperactive?

Our family dog Aurora, has always eaten the Eukanuba (she is now 8) and still has hypo moments. We just always thought she was a 'happy to see you-lick you to death' kinda dog! But maybe there is something in the food!

Just a question...does your puppy school sell a specific brand of food? they could simply be trying to switch you to 'their' brand, my agility club pushes their members to feed Pro Pac because we are sponsored by them

But yes the brand of food you are using may simply not agree with your pup, if you are concerned just buy a small bag of a new food and change the pup over and see what results you get

No they don't sell any dog food, the trainer said she has had a number of people mentioning that there puppy is quite hyperactive after eating and most of them seemed to be eating eukanuba.

so I thought I should try another brand, just wasn't sure which others are any good.

I have my pup on Royal Canin...scratch that, at the moment she is on a mix of Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Nutro, Pro Pac and Holistic Select, lol, I got a stack of samples and a couple of 3kg bags for free so Ive slowly been mixing them as Im low on RC, but when she is on just RC she does well on it

okay thanks for the suggestions I might try the Royal Canin, I still have a lot of eukanuba left so I guess I will miix them a little till she is just on Royal canin.

Perhaps if you mix the Eukanuba with another food source, maybe the hyperactivity will lessen enough that you could feed out the bag? It would certainly give a good indication if the food is the source, I would think.

I'd forget the Eukanuba for now and try another brand see if it changes the behaviour..... if it does donate the Eukanuba to charity.

Its not worth the behaviour characteristics of hyperactivity to set in at puppy age if its only caused by the food.

You could also try Natures Gift puppy can food and see if that helps, as it has no additives.

could be simply that you have a healthy puppy.

or your giving it a premium food so it has lots and ots of energy and calories to burn. have you had other dogs on cheaper food maybe thats the difference

I work at a petstore and havnt heard of that before. however corn can affect dogs in a wide variety of ways. mainly skin conditions though..
