Good morning all !!!

Wondering if anyone out there has any information as to whether the Herpes vaccine 'Eurican Herpes 205' by Merial is available in Australia ??

We have had a lot of problem with fertility and some late term abortions in our bitches and have had herpes suggested to us, and the possibility of vaccinating to rule out that problem....

Have anyone else had alot of problems getting bitches pregnant and holding the puppes in the last 12 months ???

Hi Showmummy,

We have also been experiencing fertility issues within our bloodlines and the breed in general. I too have had friends overseas suggest Canine Herpes as the cause and Herpes vaccines.

I will be very interested in any information or input you receive here.

I do know the vaccine is not available in Aust.

We have ruled out many other causes and theories with our girls, the Canine Herpes virus is something that has always sat in the back of my mind as a lot of imports are used in our breed and could very well be carriers.....this of course is just my lay persons opinion

Showmummy, will check with a friend in the USA for you as she had mentioned a friend who lost a litter from suspected herpes virus and she told me that there is a tablet you can give thru pregnancy and whilst bitch is nursing that helps keep the virus under control. I just can't think of the name of the tablet off hand.

  • 3 weeks later...

Have PM'd Showmummy but thought others might be interested in this information as well.

Sorry to take so long to send you the information on the Canine Hervesvirus. The product we give is human type L-Lysine 500mg (I cut them in half, then break them apart in the food). We start giving the tablets as soon the the bitch comes in season and continue until after she finishes nursing. According the the expert we had at our seminar the babies could get the disease in uterine at approx 3 weeks before whelping. By starting early, it is in the mom's system in plenty of time. Candy & Steve, having lost an entire litter of 7 have become qusi-experts. It is also extremely important that the babies are kept very warm/and in no drafts until they are 3 weeks old! I just followed their instructions since I'd bred "Sophie" to "Jesse" and he was the sire of their litter too. I've had 3 litters since then by "Jesse" and so far everything has been OK. Candy also had a litter sired by "Jesse" and her litter was fine to. She just had a litter sired by "Jack" they are the same age as your litter and doing fine.

Here is a website Candy sent me months ago: www.2ndchance.info/herpesvirusdog.htm. Hope it helps, this is devastating as the babies appear healthy and then all of a sudden begin to die, they are pretty safe after 3 weeks of age. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.....

I believe that the Canine Herpes Virus is a big cause of infertility / lost puppies in this country. Most vets will tell you we don't have it here.

It will be interesting what others have to say about it. I sort of laugh when stud dog owners ask that a bitch have a swab, yet it is not generally expected that the stud dog also be checked prior to a mating. I can understand why a lot of breeders choose to go down the AI path with fresh semen as opposed to a natural mating.
