Cleft Palete Question

Hi just wondering other breeders views and experience on cleft paletes. I have never had one in any of my litters to date but a friend recently has 4 in a litter of 9. The litter was very closely bred. I always thought it was a defect due to breeding too close but others say it is casued by a lack of something in pregnancy. Would you breed from a pup out of litter where there were cleft paletes or would these pups be more prone to produce it. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Cleft Palate is a birth defect. It is the failure of the palate bones to form correctly.

Very commonly seen in Bulldogs and is common in a surprising amount of other breeds.

We have always given our bitches folic acid as they come into season and continue this through until well after they have been mated. we have never had a cleft in our puppies.

I am not saying this is a complete cure but it is definetly recommended
