The Spotted Devil
Thank you! Hopefully I'll have this handling thing worked out by the time Em is ready to race me to the finish line It seems Akira is enjoying herself a little TOO much Sounds like you are making good progress WA :p Edited April 5, 2011 by The Spotted Devil
whiskedaway
It seems Akira is enjoying herself a little TOO much Sounds like you are making good progress WA Yes, I think she is. It wasn't very obvious last week, but she's actually been listening to me better because she's enjoying it than she normally does. Last week she was the only one of the dogs who went through the tunnel in a U shape without refusing the first time they tried it (we did a lot of tunnel training over the summer break though to get her used to running into a dark space) though she wasn't quite so happy with the collapsed tunnel. She needs stacks of work on her recall though because she's a typical Sibe who says "nah, I don't feel like coming back" - I think I need Halo out there because if I called Halo (whose recall is almost perfect) Akira would come running too because she thinks Halo's going to get something she won't. :D
B-Q
Finally had Quinns first Pre Ag class tonight with dogs... lesson learnt - NEVER leave a 10 month old Border Collie without a walk for 2 days then excpect her to crate quietly and watch other dogs run around. My perfect puppy just became an hour of horror. Good news, she can do everything we are learning but she needs SOO much work on her impulse control. I don't know exactly how to fix it, her main issue is watching other dogs work. She can't watch other dogs move sheep, she can't watch them tug, she can't watch them chase a ball. It leads to a lunging, barking ball of pathetic curly-tailed, puffy hackles. She just wants to be over there and INTO IT! I can usually keep her attention on me if I catch it quick enough but its taking out any use of the tug in class because if anyone else is tugging she just gets soo overstimulated so fast and flies of the handle. I try to get her attention before she cracks but its a bit of a struggle. I can't even think about her offleash until we sort it, ideas? I'm hoping maturity and more exposure will help but I don't want to rely on that either. Edited April 12, 2011 by B-Q

wuffles
We have only had two agility lessons so far but we are loving it! Did anyone use sending to rewards as a technique to help their 'obedience dogs' work away from them and stop drifting into the handler at every possible moment? Any tips as to how to go about this properly? She is not toy motivated, but will do anything for food, and is already used to being sent to food containers in obedience training. I use a tug toy with food inside it: http://www.aussieagility.com.au/productdet...ate_jackpot.htm Some nights I don't bother with the tug at all (Ziggy has his 'moments' ) but just throw it for him. ETA: Nicki at Aussie Agility is great to deal with - just let her know what you are after. Edited April 18, 2011 by The Spotted Devil

Definitely on my shopping list - unfortunately it is quite a long list at the moment ;) When you throw the toy, do you get the dog to bring it back and treat them from it? Not with Ziggy - that's asking a little too much interaction with a toy for him but you could do it. Took me 12 months to shape a really confident dumbbell retrieve - not going to worry about tug toys on an agility course!!! ETA: Zig can eat a lot of treats without putting on weight so I use 4 legs balls or the Eukanuba treat biscuits broken in half - you need something they can just grab and eat without being distracted and sniffing the ground when they can't find it. Sorry, feeling very noobie here - LOL. How do they get the treats from the toy? Ava thinks retrieving is torture which is why I was asking
The Spotted Devil
Ah! I just run to the toy, open it up and let him eat from the toy - they get the hang of it pretty quickly. Particularly if you play with it at home (and maybe introduce a big of tug) where they feel really comfortable. Just beware that it can take a while for the dog to feel comfortable about tugging etc in novel environments so just be patient and don't push them. Vickie
I'm finding it bloody hard! I haven't tried it but I did see it and it looked tricky! (guessing you mean the 6th April one?) Which bit is getting you stuck? I don't like 3 to 4 in either of them and I don't like tunnels next to obstacles in general yep that's the one. Which bit am I getting stuck at? Lol all of it! I have been working on trim driving ahead more...not a great course for this lol. I just moved a couple of jumps, when I paced it out, seems like I was making it harder than it was. I can get through it if I handle safely & throw a few extra crosses in, but trying to do the first 5 on the left isn't working at all! The turn off the af to tunnel is not great either, not something we train as it wasn't in the rules until this year. Layering the jump between the weaves either brings the bar down or she is not smooth into the tunnel. I need to break it down & work on each bit. Shine is still not allowed to do agility, hopefully I'll have better luck with her when I can try it.

Vickie
Oh no what's happened to Shine? Has she been injured?Wow sounds interesting LOL - but challenging! She's fine sprained her toe a couple of weeks ago. I just want to let it heal properly before any more agility or sheep. I don't "do" recurring injuries :p
pie
Ahh, those pesky toes. Hope she recovers well. :p Trixie is about to have a big break from agility training - She is getting spayed on Thursday, I'm expecting it to take 4 weeks or more before she can do agility again, and in 5 weeks I am going overseas for 5 weeks! I expect she will be pretty rowdy by the time I get back! Kyzer will love the break, he's always so much more enthusiastic after a holiday. They are staying with my mum for the 5 weeks and I am going to have to have stern words with her to make sure she doesn't turn them into kegs on legs by the time I get back
Vickie
Thought I'd share this video of our RQH runs from Saturday. Thanks so much to Tammy for filming both my girls, the quality is amazing! Unfortunately Shine knocked the spread but I was still really happy with her run. Trim felt amazing! Such good girls
