CHARGES against a man who allegedly mutilated Buckley the dog have been dropped by police.

A St Albans man in his early 30s faced a minimum of 11 criminal charges after the eight-week-old border collie-staffordshire bull terrier was found with his ears and tail hacked off in a St Albans schoolyard in July last year, the Moonee Valley Leader reports.

The charges included torture and aggravated cruelty.

Moonee Ponds Sen-Sgt Ian Jones said a brief of evidence recommended charges but there was insufficiant and non-corrobative evidence to lay them.

“It would not have stood up in court,” he said.

The man had received “psychiatric care” at an undisclosed unit.

Police have not released the man’s identity, fearing a “disturbing” backlash against him.

The decision is expected to outrage members of a Facebook site dedicated to Buckley, which has attracted more than 210,250 members.

Disgusting isn't it! I can't believe the man has had no consequences for this horrendous crime. If he has a mental illness that bad he can do this to a puppy he should be locked up regardless.

What is wrong with our "justice" system?

ETA - bring on the 'disturbing backlash'

I don't know that I go along with this, S/chick, unless it is just verbal on the facebook site. However, one of the problems we face today is that all levels of government have divested themselves of caring for the mentally ill. Institutions have been shut because so many were hell holes, but nothing was put in place for people such as this man.

He obviously shouldn't be allowed in the community, but there is no where for him to go where he would be safe and the community would be safe.

Gods knows what the solution is.:laugh::rofl:
