When the weather turns all warm again, I think we should arrange a trip t Brighton Dog Beach, that's reasonably central.

Can't wait SG! My cousin is down that way, so she could bring her rough coated collie :o

I haven't been to the Brighton beach one, but a little further around is Ricketts point, where there is a cafe!

Offleash dog beach and good coffee. Two big ticks in my book!

And to Wizzle who lives in Glen Iris, the walks along Gardiner's creek are just fantastic!! My parent's lived in Glen Iris for almost 10 years (just moved to Canterbury) and I grew up in Camberwell. I love the way that all the wakling tracks link up in that area, and you can walk for miles without leaving the green corridors!

We take walks often through the Gardiner's Creek, it is pretty. Sometimes we see other dogs, sometimes we don't (depends on what time of day we walk!).

I am certainly no where near a point (not sure if I ever will be) where we are ready to let her off her lead. She would just run, and run, and run, and run and.... not in my direction!

Is walking your dog and occasionally crossing paths with other dogs (might stop, have a bit of a sniff, but essentially keep walking), enough interaction for dogs to have with other dogs, for them to be well socialised with them? I feel as though she is being deprived of quality play time with other dogs....

Sure it is Wizzle.

Some dogs can be a bit stressed on lead when approached by other dogs and it often comes from owner reactions. Concentrate on having her politely meet other dogs on lead, no pulling on lead and no leaping on other dogs. Try not to apply your own pressure to the lead as it conveys tension to them and may unsettle her even though there is nothing to be worried about. One good way is to work with another owner and dog, just walking past each other and then call her to you, when she responds, praise and treat her. Then as she gets better at that you can walking past each other closer and closer, repeating the exercise until you can walk past most socialised dogs, she can stop for a quick hello and then focus back on you and walk off again straight away. Use well socialised dogs or dogs you trust initially.

Then if you want her to have any play off lead, you can restrict that to safe backyards or properly fenced areas, like Kepala etc. Its nice for them to play with other dogs, but they don't have to be off lead to do that. They can bounce and play on lead pretty well too. If she will call off the play like you have trained her, she can have a bit of rough and tumble on lead (makes owners very deft at untangling leads) and then you can choose when she plays and when she just says hello quickly and quietly.

I agree with SG. :(

Personally, I don't let my girls meet other dogs in my area. Its just the way I am.

But I take them to Werribee where they play with my dads dog. They also get to play with my step brothers' Staffy and my brother-in-laws BC cross on occasion. We also go to Kepala monthly, and have HUGE plays.

I guess I just don't trust the dogs in my area, after being chased and corned by a few, and having most of the others try to break the fence down when you walk past their yards...

Phew! Makes me feel better. Thank you for your advice!

She is happy enough to meet others when on the lead, she tries to chase them and it is funny when some dogs just aren't interested. But when she does meet a new dog, she basically just sits there and let's them do all the work!!! I think there is one large social butterfly trapped inside this little dog!

I try to encourage her meeting as many dogs as she can, unless they are unaccompanied (no owner in site) or if their own says they don't want their dogs interacting.

Will she outgrow the need to dribble urine every time she meets a new dog friend? It is really embarrassing! I feel like I should be taking the shower power with me to the park!

LOL most puppies (and young dogs) have this problem - they just get excited! But they should grow out of it. If not, then its a trip to the vet, but you shouldn't be worried about it now. My 8 month old female sometimes has accidents when she is really excited - but thats very rare now

When Charlotte first came here she used to bounce and go crazy when she met other dogs! However that day onwards she had the most magnificant recall. I let her off lead 3 days after picking her up from her previous home and she went straight in a river swam after ducks then back to me when i called her :)

I have done limited training with her, she is just one of those dogs that has been easy to set down house rules to :)

I know a nice place to go to as well, Ruffey Lake Park. Good for the water babies and is a MASSIVE off lead dog park. It is out in Doncaster, but it's brilliant. I used to go there weekly but havent been for a while.

I have ALWAYS wanted to go to the dog beaches but never got down there. Anyone know which the good ones are?

Werribee sounds like a good idea Pointees. I have to go down to Wyndham Vale in a few weeks which i believe is close to Werribee?

forgot to add, Charlotte dribbles big puddles when she is told off or if she gets a fright from a dog who isnt as social as herself! She doesnt dribble at other times though. I'm sure your dog will grow out of it

:) Good idea!

I'm thinking of going to River Bend Historic Park with the girls. Also in Wyndham Vale. :)

Pointees: The plan was to let Charlotte have a run around then pick the new birdies up in wyndham vale, but i've been waiting for the breeder to say when they're ready. The fledged a few weeks ago so it shouldnt be too much longer...

Pointees: I haven't driven in ages! Time to drive my car around a bit. Having gotten my L's prior to the new rules i don't have to show the proof of 120 hours experience. I will have already gotten that much anyway, but the plan is to get my P's end of the year or early next year all going to plan of course. I have a lesson tuesday and then one of my friends is taking me out wednesday. Mum wont take me out and i refuse to drive with dad ever again! We were driving down the ring road and he fell asleep and was snoring. I was basically driving on my own! :)

Mum is basically frightened of another accident i think (I had a major accident when i was 16 and first got my L's and mum's been freaked out to let me drive with her since then!)

Pity that i'm busy so much at the moment or else i'd come and meet up with you Pointees!
