Something Fishy.......

My dog was very excited this morning (more than usual) because he was having a ball with a visitor we had over. Soon enough, i noticed a fishy smell coming from his backside and i suspect its the anal gland, i also noticed the area around his anus was more brownish than he usually is (almost like he didn't wipe his butt after a poo if you know what i mean :( ).

Do i need to be worried and get the gland expressed? I've noticed the smell before but it usually goes away within the day. Could it be that when he poo'ed today, the stuff got onto his bottom so it caused the smell? I've wiped his bum with a moisten cloth and it doesn't smell too bad now.

Dory gets this quite regularly. Being Vet Nurse I can get the Boss to check her butt regularly. (Hey, that's why they pay him the big money! :( ) She often doesn't need a clean out...even if she has been scooting her butt. (I'm suspecting she just likes to wipe her butt for herself...or it feels good or something! :) )

I'm testing a theory that it might be allergy related for her. One of my co-workers gave her a lovely red coloured treat and poor Dory nearly ripped herself apart from just one small treat. And the spot she really focussed on was her butt...she licked it raw in less than 24 hours.

If your puppy seems otherwise ok, and isn't butt scooting I would just keep an eye on it. If he is licking his butt, stopping to stare at his butt, scooting his butt or scratching his ears(weird I know...but they will often shake their heads or scratch their ears when they have butt problems) then I would get him vet checked.
