atua
Hi, Sorry that this is not the correct place but thought more people may see this rather than the show ring area. Just wondering how old a puppy should be before starting show training? We have a 10 week old Whippet puppy and show training is on tonight. Not sure if the baby is still too young or not. Its for my son who is almost 10. He will be handling the dog. Thanks in advance.
WreckitWhippet
I start training mine from the time they can stand and learn to stack but we've never been to formal lessons with our dogs. I'm teaching a lady how to show her baby puppy who is 9 weeks old, the lessons are short and informal, with some homework to do each week. It's all about keeping the puppy happy, getting the puppy to focus on her handler. I would be very reluctant to drag a baby off to any kind of formal lessons, pups can tire in a few minutes, they get bored and you risk them going sour. ETA: send your son off to show training with an older dog , so he can practice. Take it easy with the puppy Edited July 1, 2010 by SBT123
Aziah
I currently have two 12 week old baby girls who have had no more than 1 minute every night in the kitchen leading and they are going wonderfully. They have taught themselves to free stand with no guidance from me, they just love to please. I think actual show training for babies isn't necessary, however taking them along one night just before their first sow is often good so they can get the feel of the actual show environment on a smaller scale
atua
Thanks very much for the input. We have been practising each day at home but wasnt sure whether the puppy would benefit from actual training itself with other dogs etc. He had been doing show training with a adult dog but of a different breed. Thanks again guys. I wasnt to keen on the idea as she hasnt finished all her shots yet either and also wasnt sure if there was a rule about the age. At 10 weeks your baby is too young for formal classes. In our State pups can't enter canine grounds until 3 months and also your pup needs to have had all its shots so best to do practise at home for the time being. becks
Wait until all vaccs are completed and then take the pup for a couple of turns, it is a long night for a young pup and they don't need to take part in the full class. However, taking a crate along and letting them get used to the sights and sounds is a good idea.
