Excessive Drooling

D (7 year old GSD) has had 3 cases of excessive drooling in... 2 months

It's as though someone has turned a tap of clear (as opposed to foamy) drool that leaks from his jowls

The first time I thought (still think) he might have been bitten in the mouth by a spider as he was sitting in an odd place in the hallway... and there was a spider near by . I rang the vet straight away and monitored him as directed - checked gums, eyes, heart rate, and aside from drooling uncontrollably he was fine, he ate some dinner and the drooling stopped in about 30 min.

The second time I can't think of any trigger for the drooling, it didn't go on for very long at all.

Last night it happened again, and went on for almost 2 hours - he was still bright and lively, ate dinner, searched around for his treat (which I gave him to take his mind of the drooling because he would come by and look at me like, 'why can't I stop dribbling everywhere' :sad face: )

and all times I make sure he has plenty of water to rehydrate afterward - his pillows are soaked, but he doesn't seem particularly thirsty!

Has any one experienced this or have any ideas as to what it could mean?

I was going to discuss with a family vet friend today, but he left before I could corner him so I might call him later this week... I'm going to make some notes as to what he has eaten in case this happens again, but as for last night he had some curried rice, roast chicken and dry food (courtesy of mum's leftovers) and would never usually eat this so it doesn't link with the 2nd time...

The only thing in common is that it happens in the evenings... and maybe exclusively on a Saturday.. Friday's dinner consists of mince and sardines but to have a reaction 24 hours later...

The only time my dog drooled excessively was after a fit. In fact it was often the only way we knew she had had an un- observed seizure. She would drool for about 30 minutes.

Might be a good idea to check with your vet friend. It's supposedly a sign of a dog being unwell. The one time my 2 dogs got really drooly, was when they got a bout of gastro.

My Lab has done this a few times.

First time, no reason we could find, vet checked him out and nothing obviously wrong, he got over it in a few hours.

Second time, scorpian bite. Started with drooling and then his face swelled.

Thrid time, gastro

pretty sure it's not seizures as he was around me the whole time and no signs of gastro (normal solid stools the day after)
