Lab lady Posted June 26, 2010 Share Posted June 26, 2010 I have a girl that is scared of the toaster she is fine with things like the lawnmower, vacuum or any power tool, not a bit concerned about fireworks or thunderstorms but get the toaster out of the cupboard and she dives under the bed. I am not sure why exactly? but he won't go anywhere near smoke! Other wise they are pretty good with most things including thunderstorms and wild weather (unlike bigger dogs I have owned in the past) Even the recent earth tremor didn't faze them. Not the acoustic, not the electric guitar, only the bass. He is a bit better now, cause we did some training with him. He now realises it won't hurt him. Do you think it was the noise or the guitar or a bit of both? _____________________________________ It's strange to think we aren't the only beings with irrational fears. She's fine if they're tied up or something but if one comes floating towards her she flips out and starts barking at it and whining! Thou Sooty's list used to be longer once - he was too scared to walk past a house with a garden setting in the front yard. And guys in dark clothes. And garden hoses on rolls. And the ironing board. He gets very nervous when it's windy in case a door blows shut but is fine with the wind if on a walk. Hope is scared of spray cans especially the the flyspray. Mine was scared of the look of it (accoustic owned by a 7 yr old), but totally petrified of a single strum. Lucky none of us actually knew how to play the thing This is a dog who used to chase the ride on so he could get a ride on it, so can't really fathom the guitar fear. We suspect he may have knocked it over once, and perhaps he associates the noise with the pain of a bass falling on him or the fright of a loud bang if the bass hit the floor. I suspect there are frequencies coming out of it that can't be heard, but can be heard and felt by him. It doesn't matter whether it's plugged in to the amp or not. Woody is so terrified of fly spray, that he won't go in a room where there is a can of it. But we threw the fly spray out rather than try to train him to accept it. Mostly it's the vacuum cleaner, washing machine and microwave, though it used to include the heater and dishwasher as well. She's slowly getting better with them though. TBH, when we first got her she was scared of us as well, so I don't think she was very well socialised and all of the things she's scared of are "occassional" things that don't necessarily happen every day. Fevah Posted June 26, 2010 Share Posted June 26, 2010 Jacques gets stressed if there is a strange/new man he doesn't know and of big dogs who pay too much attention to him, and unfortunately most are curious and do get in his space Remy is by nature quite an anxious fellow but I've noticed he gets more freaked out by things if I'm not there. Labradors are extremely dog friendly, sure there are rascals out there that are not and it could be due to a number of reasons, but overall Labradors are extremely dog friendly. Insofar as the original question for this thread goes, my Lab pup is scared of the vacuum cleaner - I only have to pull it out and he is off outside, but if backdoor is closed he will hide behind he couch until I let him out. My oldest boy is scared of thunder and gets very stressed by it and similar loud noises like fireworks, but doesn't give too hoots about the vacuum cleaner and I can vacuum so close to him and he doesn't even move My other boy is not phased by anything at all, he is our protector :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
