moko81
Hi All, Our bitch came into season in March (3rd Season), we mated her but unfortunately she didn't fall. Have noticed the last couple days our boy has been hanging around her like a bad smell, didn't think nothing of it as she was in season in March. Anyway I decided to check her fanny as our boy wouldn't stop sniffing her & what do you know she's in season again. Now I'm not sure how long she's been bleeding for. But what I wanted to know, is her coming into season 3mths after her last season some sign that things may not be right internally with her or could she just be one of those bitches who comes in frequently. As we would love to have her fall this time, when should we start prog' testing her? & also I know these no# differ but what prog' no# do you mate ur bitches on. Thanks in advance for all your replys Moko
Pulilover
Its a bit unusual that your bitch appears to be in season after 3 months. I would get an ultrasound done. I would not go to just anyone, make sure its someone who knows what they are doing, maybe a repro specialist. There are different measures of progesterone, often termed the high scale and the low scale. The level of progesterone you do a mating at depends on which scale your vets machine uses. angelsun
One of our girls has done exactly the same thing (although was four months between seasons) She cycles frequently normally anyway.

Yea, she had her 2nd season in October last year, then came in for her 3rd season in March & now she's come in again. Now what will the ultrasound show, sorry if it seems stupid to ask. With the prog testing everyone I've asked has totally different no# some a really low like 9 then there's others who do it at like 60 & even in the hundreds. Sandra777
I've had a bitch who came in season every 3 months on the dot. Not fun if you want to show them As she's young I'd have her thoroughly checked out by a specialist, could be something amiss, certainly best to know for sure! ~Myschafis~
I have also had a bitch do a 3 monthly cycle on me. Before and after pups. When her pups where 8 weeks old she came into season again. (was a very strange season and did not last more than 2 weeks, with very light bleeding and not a strong smell) At first I did think it was an infection post pregnancy so to the vet we went, nothing wrong she really was in season. Over the years it has had me concerned the increased risk of pyo etc, because she has had more seasons than typical bitches of her breed. However she seems to be evening out now to a 6 monthly season. (only taken her near 5 years) I did fear her daughter would do the same, she never did though and was 11 months before her first season. So far I haven't encountered any problems with it, she went on to produce 6 healthy babies. However I understand your concern, I have had my bitch into a couple of vets to check out internals etc and she is fine. Just one of those things. I have put it down to her being a tart

There could be something else wrong, it might not be the reproductive tract. I had a bitch who was bleeding on and off for quite some time, I finally had an ultrasound done and the problem was not in her repro tract it was in the bladder. With the progesterone- there are two different unit measures used by the different types of machines, one measures in nano moles, the other in nanograms. In addition to this machines have calibration differences. It is up to the vet to know their own machine and advise the right time to inseminate. A natural mating or fresh AI will be done at a different progesterone level than insemination with frozen semen. That's why there are different ideal levels of progesterone. moko81
Just an up date on our girl. Took her in to get a check up, no infections found and after a wk of bleeding she is still teetering between 0 & 1. The vet did say she could be having a split season or that the last one in March could've been split. We worked out that last time we mated her we did it too early hence the reason she didn't fall & am guessing she is a slow bitch So will take her into the vet next wk to have a smear test so we can see how she's coming along. Thanks everyone for your posts

To be honest I think she might be the same, we know a few different people in the breed who swear by mating (no prog' testing) on days 10, 12 & 13 which have caught everytime. Unfortunately our girl doesn't work like that, she has her own agenda :D :D
Pulilover
One of my golden retrievers only had successful matings at day 21 of her season (from 1st day of bleeding). She was mated earlier on 3 occasions and no puppies resulted each time. The Pulis generally are around day 10 to 14, but each one is different. Good luck, hope you get puppies

We have been told doing it this way is just wasting money but this is coming from veteran breeders who know exactly how there bitches cycle. Thanks we hope we get puppies too :p :D Edited July 6, 2010 by moko81
moko81
Hi all, just another update. :D took our girl in to have a prog' test today & she was 74.8 most definately was not expecting that no# we thought maybe 11 or 15. Our vet told us previously that btwn 25 & 80 was a good time to do the matings, god I hope so. My hubby noticed that she had stopped bleeding yesterday so he decided to do a mating just for practice he also did another this arvo before we went to the vet. So glad he did & where crossing everything that we ain't missed her. Has anybody else mated at this level & had there bitch fall. I know all bitches are different but just holding on to a glimmer of hope as friends of ours have missed there bitches this high. Thanks for all the posts, much appreciated. Peaches
Hi, just wanted to find out if your bitch is pregnant. I have a bitch who's last few cycles have been 3 monthly and we mated her between days 11 and 15 of the last cycle. Now, 10 days later, another bitch is mounting her again and she is swinging her tail, more so than when we mated her (didn't swing at all to the dog, just a bit to bitches but she was a maiden). In between mating and now there hasn't been any interest from the bitches. Hi all, just another update. took our girl in to have a prog' test today & she was 74.8 most definately was not expecting that no# we thought maybe 11 or 15.
