huga
Mr Huga brought home a present for me lastnight - a spanky new D80. Not the newest or the best model, but it was such a bargain and we are on a pretty tight budget at the moment. So now I have my very own DSLR! Now I have to figure out how to use it. So many more options than the little old Pentax. If it wasn't for DOL, I wouldn't have this love for photography - I love the sharing that goes on in this little community. I just wanted to say thank you - to two people especially. To Ash for the challenges, they started to get me interested in improving my skills with my little P & S. And also for loaning me one of her cameras for the past 6 months or so, I really appreciate it And to Rocco, who was the first person to tell me that I needed a DSLR (even though I didn't know I needed one!) and is so lovely and encouraging to me :D You're both awesome
tlc
Thats fantastic you will absolutley love it!! To begin with I already thought you used a DSLR, you definatley have an eye for photography, there will be no stopping you now and you have great subjects, lovely kids. skin and fur!! Was it a total suprise? How lovely of Mr Huga do do such a nice thing!! I have a D80 book that come with a cd when I first got mine. I read the book from front to back but I never bothered with the cd. Im sure you will be able to nut it all out but the book certainly gave me a bit more of an insight. If you want them just PM me your address and I'll post them on to you. I'd be glad if someone else got the use out of it!! Earthdog
How much difference between a D70 and D80? If Huga doesn't want the book I'd be happy to pay for it.

No worries, there is a bit of difference between the D80 and the D70 the book actually says "perfect for D70 owners too" have a look here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_d80.asp http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_d70.asp
huga
No, it wasn't a total suprise - he consulted me first It's actually been a pain trying to get one. Mr Huga is a buyer for an electrical retailer (home theatre unfortunately, not cameras), so looked into getting a D90 for me. Even staff price was still more expensive than DWI etc. So he found one D80 left at a store, they'd had it for over 12 months so were willing to go under cost price to get rid of it. We asked that it be put aside until we could get up there to pick it up. A staff member bought it the next day So he managed to find another one at another store, but it was waiting on a replacement battery from Nikon. It finally came through and he picked it up for me lastnight :D Tlc - thank you so much, I would love those. I'll PM you.

becandcharch
Your going to have a ball :D The nifty fifty is only about $130. Best lens!!
tlc
Great shots! Bec is right about the nifty fifty. My OH got me one for Xmas after I got my D80 and he only paid $99 it is a great little lense and very versatile. Huga, I have posted the good I did register it so you will have to sign when it comes, don't laugh at the way it is stuffed in the bag, the girl at the post office that helped me choose which way to send it assured me that it would fit and fit it did :D after a very tight squeeze but it had gone in and there was no going back!! You will see what I mean when you get it!!
huga
Is the nifty fifty the 50mm 1.8? Because that's what I was thinking of getting. I was constantly using the 28-80 on the Pentax, so wanted to get the 24-70, but it is too far out of our price range at the moment. I'd have to sell a child to get that one Thank you so much tlc :D
tlc
Yep there is a 1.8 and also a 1.4 but the one point 4 is a lot more exxy. OH got mine off ebay and I haven't had a minutes trouble with it and it has done some work the poor little thing for a cheapie lense they are just great! huga
Aww, you guys are too kind. I'm just about to put the kids in the bath and I want to test how the camera goes in low light :D
tlc
Oh look forward to seeing how you go, one good thing I have found with the D80 is the ability to shoot well in low light with the iso fairly high, I shot some of the dogs the other day inside in dimish light and at 1600 there was no noise in the shots at all, I was happy with that but the shots were crap
rocco
CONGRATS.... good to see this girl has style with a Nikon. I know for a fact Ash will be pushing you along with me to start taking this seriously as you could go far and now with a decent DSLR totally unstoppable. I love your photography. Awesome work Huga. Let me know if you want to trial the 50. I haz a brand spanking new 24-70 now after I dropped it, so you can give that a trial too if you want.
