Dogsfevr
Infact it is very easy to prove, put your money up but reality is people will bitch, make judgement ,point the finger BUT wont take the matter further . For me making accusations you cant or wont prove is also cheating because it is a big claim to make against another person. I remember a case here where a small minded group of exhibitors accused another person of dying there dog,put in a protest. Hair samples where taken & tested. The dog wasn.t dyed ,funny thing was not one of those trouble makkers had the decency to say "sorry" ,they just went on like it never happened & moved on to the next person to harass I have been accused of dying a dog in the past but the said people where happy to bitch & spread rumours BUT wouldnt put there money up. Paptacular!
I have heard from an exhibitor where a judge told her she should artifically enhance her dog. It's a sad, sad state of affairs when a judge advises an exhibitor they should be cheating. What the judge didn't know is that the dog in question was a Gr Ch anyway and had got to that title without being comestically altered. :D that would be shocking From memory that exhibitor was told that she should blacken the dogs toenails. Now the Standard for the breed does call for black nails but it also says: Faults: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog. I hardly think that the dog would be in a predicament if it's nails weren't black :D Non-black nails = breathing problems? Or patella luxation??? :D Better get the texta out! whippets
I use a hair straightener on my whippets. There ya go...the secret is out. I also think that for every founded accusation about dog enhancements there would be dozens of unfounded, gosssipy, rumour, I'm pi$$ed because their dog beat me for the 50th time in a row accusations. Kirislin
There's a whippet exhibitor who had a dog with an undescended testicle so he had an artificial one put in. He was found out when the judge had a feel of the dog and it had 3!!!! :D He was asked to leave the ring on that occasion but he still shows to this day. Bisart Dobes
I've had people in our breed accuse me of dying my dogs brown coats - "because you just don't get brown dobes that colour - they are way too dark". Once was when I was in the ring and so I stopped next to the steward who had heard it as well and said - "I am happy for a coat sample to be taken to put that accusation to rest but I am not leaving the ring until it is done". Well they soon shut up and after a few more 'way too dark browns' I think they get that you can get good coats on browns :D - they can't produce them and they can't maintain them but that isn't my problem . . . But then I did see a dobermann exhibitor colour in the entire tan of a bitch at Sunbury Int show - she got BOB too, for the life of me I cannot figure out how the judge didn't end up with brown crap all over his hands. I figure if people want to do things like this let them lower their standards, me I will breed to get a beautiful dark mahogany tan the way they are supposed to be - but each to their own. I certainly didn't think it was worth reporting them. Why worry about cosmetic things really when the amount of people who drug their dogs to show them is astronomical !!!! Shaar
I have heard the 3 teste story as well... not sure if it is rumor or fact, but still a timely reminder that cheating doesn't pay. I have no problem with hairspray or chalk either, just stating that 'technically' it is cheating... just not something that people really worry about. Heck I have seen Shih Tzus whos topknots you could hit with a sledgehammer. I was guilty of over spraying my own because the little blighter would shake as soon as you put him on the ground it it would fall to pieces. There are varying degrees of cheating... surgery is on the top end of the scale... painting nails or using copious amounts of hairspray are at the bottom end. I have heard this tory as well for many years with the breed changeing but I have seen it myself! (not sure if its the same exhibitor) I was only 11 and the dog in front on me had 3 testes! Heard everything that was said, remember standing there and saying out loud Oops!

For me doping is pretty close to surgery in the heinous stakes because temperament is a serious issue for the future of any breed. It's mostly doping them to adjust for excessive shyness or aggression I have concerns with. Giving them some caffeine for extra show ring zip and sparkle isn't something I'd do but it's not as disturbing.
Missymoo
Having teeth surgically fixed gets me..after all, its YOUR breeding program isnt it? To me thats wanting to win far too much.
Miss B
But these days artifically altering a dog is the normal... That's pretty sad, really. Nope,i think it is the perfect words. You cant have your cake & eat it. If people want to start rumours that a dog is dyed than those words fit well, either put up or shut up. Its easy to hide behind words & spread a story but when it comes to doing something there is every excuse under the sun why they cant. I don't know how my original question got twisted into this, but I have never 'started rumours' or 'spread stories' about other exhibitors. The type of alteration I am talking about is artificially colouring nails. Our standard calls for good pigment, including 'pads black, nails preferably dark'. I recently saw a photo of a 10-week-old puppy who had all white nails. By the time the pup hit the ring at 12 weeks, the nails were black. Is that possible? I don't know what breed you're talking about but why would you not asked experienced breeders in your breed if this is common/likely in your breed. I know in Staffords yes it is very possible, it's not likely to happen in 2 weeks for the simple fact that the nail takes longer than that to grow, but yes they can certainly change colour as the pup grows, and certain foods can help the process. For a start FIX THE QUOTE! I did NOT say that and wouldnt put it so rudely! So please change it! It seems as though you are bordering on attacking Miss B for asking a question. What would you do if you suspected a fellow exhibitor within your breed was cheating, by modifying their dogs appearance (dying the coat, colouring the nails or paw pads, etc). What would be the most appropriate way of dealing with the situation? It isnt like she has come on here and said that Joe Bloggs has dyed his dog. Now has she! Miss B as others have said its prolly honestly best to turn a blind eye! I know it really sucks but it will cost you to make a compliant and in all honestly it will more than likely get ignored anyways. I know of people that have made a compliant paid there money had evidence (an email sent to them admitting that the dog was dyed) and in the end the person who made the complaint ended up copping more crap and backlash and nothing was done to the person dying the dog. Thanks JSK, yeah it was a genuine question, I haven't been showing that long (~12 months) and have honestly never come across this situation before, so I wondered whether it was common and what is normally done about it, if anything. It's a shame that people feel the need to cheat, but I guess I would rather have the satisfaction of knowing that my dog won on it's own merits. What Showdog quoted was EXACTLY what you posted JSK, are you delusional? It's in black text right here on the screen in the thread. I stand by what I said, people can think that another is cheating in whatever form but unless they can PROVE it there is nothing they can do about it so at the end of the day they can either beat them with a better specimen, accept that they have no proof and compete regardless OR stop showing.
