koalathebear
WHat age does the desctruction start? So far my puppy hasn't managed to destroy any toys yet but I'm sure it will come as she gets her adult teeth and her mouth gets bigger! Like Puppy Sniffer said, I think it depends on the dog. If you look at this post, you'll see that fbaudry's dogs aren't chewers and their toys last. I'd guess that dogs start wanting to gnaw on things when they're a few months old ... We thought Elbie would prefer to gnaw on hard things, but he loves his plushies a lot. belladonna: Sometimes I feel like quitting with the 'surgery' on the plushies but Elbie really does love them so much and given that a $4 plushie from Pet Barn gives him hours of enjoyment for weeks and weeks, I suppose it's worth it Also, we rotate his toys so when he hasn't seen Badger or Dog in a few days, he gets sooooooooo happy
matilda1
I kind of rotate. katie comes to two different work places with me and she has seperate toys which just stay there. So when she walkes into work she'll be happy to see a toy she hasn't seen all night and vica versa. I stitch up toys a couple of times depending on the 'injuries' and the price of the toy. There is one favorite of hers which was quite expensive in the scheme of things, it's a rooster and it crows when she plays with it. but there are some I have thrown out for good now, as she did swallow the ducks foot and the mouse ears. They both passed out the other end the next day *phew* so I am very selective now. I don't plan on rushing to work and doing a Foreign body surgery on my own dog. katie just carried soft toys around in her mouth and slept with them until she was about 11 weeks. She's now 13 weeks and tears them apart. Mr Rooster is 'on holidays' following his 'operation' for a while in the hope that she will grow out of it. Or he can be brought out for special occasions and supervised play from now on.
Sydoo
I've just spent the afternoon operating on toys. I even improved a couple by transplanting squeakers from the morgue to toys that never had squeakers - her face when the giant donkey squeaked for the first time was priceless. Some toys are just more durable, but I've noticed Billie treats some of her plushies differently to others. A duck she has had since day one is still in one piece and despite an obvious hole in his belly, he remains fully stuffed. Any other random plush toy would have had the stuffing swiftly removed through a hole like that. I guess duckie is special - she sat next to me with one paw on him the entire time I was stitching. I'll certainly keep an eye out for Skinneez.

I am always on the 'forum' Between this and facebook, you can count me out for the night. Yes!!!! My OH also calls it "the forum" in a faintly exasperated, long-suffering tone. I can't help it - there are just SOOO many interesting topics/photos/arguments/debates going on in this place Also, some of the puppies are soooooooooooooooooo cute ... matilda1
hehehe, shame you are in a different state or our husbands could entertain each other.
KumaAkita
or... there could the "my wife has dumped me for a dog forum" forum. All the OH could be complaining about how much time we spend on the computer and not entertaining them!! Kuma has only just started to shred his toys, they are pretty precious to him so he's just careful about what he chews. Bunny has now lost an arm and there are holes that need fixing. We took bunny to the breeder before we picked him up - so it's been pretty well looked after! I'm probably going to have to perform surgery on it. The best lasting toys we've found have been the ones from Woolies - they're about $8-9 each but they are made of cheap durable fabric.
D & D
I have two toy de-stuffers, here. I now do an op-shop trawl every month or two. Spend $10 or $20 and come home with heaps of new toys to kill. Hehehe, his head fell off Some op-shop toys have rather disturbing stuffing :D
matilda1
Red stuffing.....that's very...ehhm......realistic
fiveplusone
Oh my goodness, that red stuffing does look very realistic. I made my own skinneez a couple of days ago. Just bought some fur fabric and made sort of flat animal shapes and machined around edges. He loves them. They are affectionately known now as his 'roadkill' toys! He loves throwing them around and giving them the death shake!
RiverStar-Aura
Thank goodness I'm not the only one with this problem. I've probably spent hundreds of dollars replacing toys for my Zeus-ling. He absolutely guts stuffed toys in minutes of me giving them to him and I've tried rubber/plastic chew toys and he won't have a bar of them (I think it's because there's no 'snow' inside). I'm now best friends with the cheapo stores and I find he loves the $1 stuffed toys as much as the Big W $15-$20 ones and because the toys are cheaper, I can afford to buy him more treats! Is there a way to stop this destructive behaviour or is it just how certain dogs play? I've noticed he's not really a 'ball dog' -- he'll fetch one but gets bored easily. I just get tired of giving him a new toy only to have him destroy it completely in 2 minutes then be done with it; he won't even look at it once the stuffing's gone. *sigh*
