Freshstart16
Hi, We have a 8 year old sterilized Chi X JRT, he was de sexed at around 3 years old. He has been behaving abnormally aggressive lately, hes a bit dominant to our other dog and they occasionally have a fight or two, but now he's been growling at the cat when they have been playing. So I put the dog up on the bed in search of a sore spot to see if that's the cause of the behaviour. Now at the base of penis I know there are some glands there. (well so i have read) and i just gave it a very very gentle touch and he growled at me and snapped his head around, I gave this an attempt a few times and it must be sore as he will not let me near it. The dog is my SIL's so we are going to arrange for him to go to the vet. In the meantime has anyone had this problem before? I hope I have explained myself correctly. As far as i know he hasn't had any trouble weeing, but i let him outside before I went out there so i haven't seen him go today. Can anyone help?? megan_
Give a vet a call ASAP. He may have an infection and be in pain.
MolassesLass
Hard to say without a photo whether the swelling you are seeing is normal (from arousal) or something worse. Best book in to the vets anyway if he's been behaving abnormally.
persephone
If you can see swelling each side of the penis- usually it is normal, and is a sign that he is aroused/excited.... neutered dogs can also have this- they do not have to be entire. he lives with you, or are you minding him? The swelling may not be a cause of his aggression, but a result? he may be aroused by whatever behaviour he is carrying on on with. The increased aggression would be my worry, not the swelling ... Does he normally let you examine him in such a way? THIS has some info ... If the swelling is very obvious, and in other areas... then a vet check is a good plan. Teebs
must be the day for it, i got a 7:30 am call from a DOLer whos penis was stuck, she told me i was the first one she thought of calling because the amount of times it has happened to Atlas ;) I found cold water works the best, gets everything back into place, but have had to have one vet trip for a bit of help ETA Said doler just messaged me and told me it was not her penis that was stuck, but her dogs... thought i better clear that up here  Edited June 22, 2010 by Teebs
julesluvscavs
Oh it must be horrible for the poor dog ;) I've owned a few male dogs in my life including Joey now, and never seen or heard of it happening before (apart from reading about other people's dogs on here)
wuffles
Mine gets this when he's excited, but it goes away after a few minutes.
Kirislin
I am not sure if you mean he actually has an erection. If so, and it's stuck dont leave it out too long. Sometimes cold water or some gentle manipulation with ky gel or oil might help, otherwise it's a vet job. You dont want him loosing circulation in it, dont leave it too long. DerRottweiler
We've used a glass of warm water with sugar mixed in it, simply pop cup over the penis for a little rinse...the sugar encourages the licking too.Someone on here told me that, we've used it a couple of times. Enigma
"I found cold water works the best, gets everything back into place" when you say this what do you mean, a cold shower, spray with cold water. I have just got (5 months ago) my first male ever and now im worried that i wont know what to do if it happens. Mind you my male is not very big in that dept and dont often see his pink pencil
Freshstart16
Thanks for the info guys, he is ok, acting completely normal unless you try to touch the base of his penis, while its "away" so to speak, the swelling isnt that obvious. He will be going to vet tomorrow. It could be nothing but it also could be something so he will definitely be going tomorrow morning. He lives with us, his mum (SIL) has recently built a house with her OH and my partner and my SIL have an agreement that she still has responsibility for him, the only reason he doesn't live with her is because the dog (Tug) we also have his brother Leroy and they don't want them to be separated. So anyway he will be going tomorrow, he has been toileting fine. persephone - thankyou for the link, i read that one today. He has a few dominance issues, hes very pushy with our other dog and they have fought alot over treats etc. Something that has gone on there whole lives, Ive only been with the dogs the last 2 years. He can be growly towards the other dog but the cat is a different story he never has ever growled at the cat before, they are very good with each other and play all the time. I am aware that any of this aggressive behaviour is unacceptable but im not sure how to stop it. Kirislin - he doesn't have an erection, everything is where it should be. it just appears to be slightly swollen at the base. I used our other dog for comparison. Freshstart16
Wahoo, Tug has been to the vet and it is Lipoma, just a small benign fatty cyst. Nothing too serious, just need to keep an eye on it and if it gets bigger will need to be removed, the vet mentioned that it could end up dragging on the ground Who the hell would let it get that big?? You cant even really see it at this stage and I tell you there is NO WAY in hell it would get that big before having something done. Anyways all is well and the vet said that it moves around so it must have been in an uncomfortable spot but he is fine to touch today. Will be keeping a close eye on it though.
