Doing An Elimination Diet But Not Sure How Much To Feed

 Share

Recommended Posts

I am currently doing an elimination diet of roo and sweet potato for my dogs allergies, i am feeding 1 sweet potato a day ( less if its a big one) about 500g roo mince and a 300g roo bone a day. Today we were back at the specialist and we weighed him and he has picked up 300g this week, can a dogs weight fluctuate so much in 1 week or has he picked up weight. How much should I cut his food by ie do I cut the mince a bit or skip the bone every second day??? Any suggestions appreciated.

Also is white poop normal when they get bones??

Start with his weight x 2% but adjust as need be. My big dog is about 37kg but only needs about 500 grams a day or he'll get fat. He was 44kg at one stage  but has been lean for years now and he's nearly 10.

I think we worked out that he needs around 700g a day, maybe I will make is 600g and then go from there, I suppose labs can pick up weight very fast... and does that 2% include the potato or is that just the meat?

When I was feeding a meat/veg BARF mix I included the veg in the weight.

LOL Yep white poop is perfectly normal....its the digested bones. When I was a kid most dog poos were white....now they're a nondescript smelly brown mess. Good luck with the diet....I've heard lots of success doing it this way. When you get to the stage of adding a different meat/bone you may want to consider goat. Its cheap and most allergic dogs do well on it.

Yes I was thinking of adding the goat or some camel when I add he foods back in one by one, camel is also relatively cheap, the place i get my pet meat sells it I think for $3.20 a KG. I cannot believe the difference of my dog on home prepared, he has been eating raw for 3 weeks now and he is looking heaps shinier and he is more active etc.

Rethink the camel....there have been some issues with dogs eating camel which has been affected by a particular weed and it has been known to cause deaths. I can't remember the name of it but it also affects wild horses and is found up north where the camels are found. Goat sold in Midvale has been sourced from the south west (I asked) and is not implicated. Murdoch should have some info on it and if you need it I can go through some records and find the relevant stuff for you.

Yep I thought so. The goat bones and meat is fantastic dog food and really cheap! I've added whole frozen Albany sardines to their diet and they are like lollies for dogs! You can get them at the seafood shop in Midland Gate.

Thanks I did not know this, I think I buy from the same place as you in Midvale :(

Might try that as a treat when the elimination diet is over, sure my boy would love it!

Roo really suits my dog but I am sure it will be boring if he spends his whole like on roo, if it turns out that he does have a food allergy ( which I am beginning to think he may have for a couple of reasons) then I will try goat as an extra for him. Their roo bones are fantastic Mason loves them so much!

Thought I'd try some roo bones when I went there during the week and thought I'd go large... they are massive!

They are huge! Mason eats all the meat off and then works on the bones for like over a day, i tend to get tired of the bone lying around and I throw it out, I now mostly get small ones lol.

Average around $10 for a kilo bag. I use them as jackpots for Brookie and the older boy Jasper gets his for free!!!!
