It would make you think twice about being voted onto any committee. I can tell you now I wouldn;t bother becoming a committee member of any club, if I couldn't exhibit.

For those that say it's a big NO for the committee members to exhibit. Have a think about the clubs in our local area, where the committee members of our bigger clubs , are also wearing the same ( sometimes different ) hat for another. There are plenty that I can think of where the Treasurer and the Secretary fillfull the same roles for a couple of other shows.

One person that I can think of in particular is on the committee of at least 3 local shows, within 35 minutes of their home. Saying no to them , would be a slap in the face , in return for all of the hard work they put it.

These people put enough effort into putting on a show for us, they deserve to enter.

yes sometimes there are hidden adgendas with judges picked etc, but thats the way its going to be, if you dont like it, put up ur hand and be on committee and have ur input

Dog shows are full of face-judging and paybacks alongside the honest judges who look at the dog

Makes winning at shows a bit irrelevant doesn't it ?

In so very cynical

I know the dodgy judges are less common so I probably should have worded it the other way around lol.

Overall I enjoy showing and have done well so I know it's possible but there are times when the decision is suspicious (such as a lame dog going up for group!!).

When you are paying for another human beings opinion, you're taking a risk. There ate no clear rules about showing, as opposed to say obedience or agility), and like I aid, I believe committee showing or not is the least of my worries!!!

What I meant is it is very hard to prove face judging etc.

I would put up a lame dog who is an excellent typey example of the breed against a dreadful, untypical, better mover on the day if there was a choice of just two. Or not award at all.

Winning relies on one or two people's opinions ( breed, then in show judging ) only. Winning never means you have the best dog or bitch there is in your breed, just in that combination of entries under that judge on that day.

What keeps people showing, I think, is when you encounter a really good judge who is only interested in the dogs and has the experience and knowledge to know what is good and doesn't give a damn about making people happy. Sadly they are in short supply.

I do not have a problem with workers showing. As others have stated they do all the hard work why should they miss out.

In the country its harder as there are less shows.

Take out recent Cav Champ show. The committee showed, they are long term committe members so would have missed out for a number of years.

No contact with the judges until the end of day 2. It wasa husband and wife team and neither watched the judging of the other until the end of the second day.

I believe we are on the same page as I agree with what you wrote especially the last paragraph!!!

At our last specialty show (march) and before I became Secretary we won 4 classes. Best Black Dog, Best black Bitch, Best Puppy and Opposite Limit. We also had 2 placings. The Black Classes were Judged by the emergancy judge and the others obviously by the International Specialist. All my dogs either won or were placed by two different judges. I know there was probably "talk" but it would be nice to think that someone may have "Gee, isn't her breeeding program working."

My view is that everyone should be on a committee or contribute in some way every year. It needn't be an office bearer position and by "in some way" I mean other stuff as well ie, stewarding, card writing, helping at working bees, donating if you have cash for trophies, helping with show training classes etc.

I know there are some people who will never contribute, but while I agree that breed clubs and remote clubs are a different case, I have trouble seeing how someone living in our region is "missing out" by not showing one or two weekends a year. I'm going to start a separate thread about the benefits of being on a committee. Yes you have whingers but you also have significant benefits, especially for people who are not already all breeds judges and have ambitions to go further in dog world.

Don't really care if committee show or not but, as a show secretary I didn't show. Besides the fact that I have enough to do on the day, it is me who liaises with the judges so, personnally, I think it is unethical to show. I did, however, enter a dog and had someone else have the dog for the day and show it.

I was asked if I would be show sec for a show some distance from me and said yes, I would enter my dog but have someone else show it.

When I was younger and had no sense, I was Secretary for 3 All Breed Clubs and 2 Ag. Society All Breeds Shows as well as being on the committee of another couple of Clubs. The shows where I was on Committee only I would show. Found that I just didn't have the time to prepare and show dogs where I was Secretary. One year I tried it - we had an International Breed Specialist for Group 2 so I had the President do all the Judge involved things while I stayed well out of the way. That worked really well except I missed my call :(

At metropolitan shows no i dont think commitee members should be exhibiting, as there are plenty of other shows through out the year with little travel to do. In country areas where the commitee, secretary maybe showing their dogs and it is some distance to other shows and there isnt a show every weekend, then that is fine, i dont mind. But in saying that, you get to realise who is secretary of a particular show, know a particular person who is on commitee or will be stewarding at that show and who is judging, work out that yes a certain person will win, either the sec, commitee person or steward and they will win. Its hard finding this out AFTER you have travelled several hours for the show and then have them laugh in your face and confess that they had it in the bag all along. Its stinks, but when you know your win is honest and not swayed by who you knew or what you had to do with the club or whatever else, it is a great feeling and its heartwarming that your dog won on its own merits.

As long as they haven’t had contact with the judge I don’t have an issue with it. However when they arrange the judge, have lunch with the judge and the go on to win BIG it looks very bad. I have even seen one instance where the judge was staying with the person they put up. In our breed club even though we are very small we manage to have a non showing person do all contact with the judge and pick them up and deliver them to the show so committee members can show so I don’t see why all breeds can’t do the same.

I think it largely depends on where people's passion lies. Some folks are more keen on active showing, and some also love the administrative and organisational side of it. Neither are more right or wrong, as they are both necessary parts of it. One person might not bat an eyelid at missing the odd show here or there but for others that may be a big thing.

I'm a bit of a fence sitter. I can see why it doesn't always look good. But I don't think that many Committees have long queues of people waiting to join, and the more restrictions that are involved, the more people might just give it a miss - life is too complicated anyway - and stick to going to shows instead of helping to organise them.

For those voting yes, would it bother you if the President or the Secretary of the club won BIS or RUBIS?

Depending on certain circumstances.

Going on an past experience, one show I went to the judge turned up with the club president, the club president introduced the judge etc.

The president the went on and showed there dogs (an early breed in the group) then took over as steward for that same group calling the judge by first name and then handed over stewarding to take her dog into the best in group line up and surprise surprise the president got BIG.

yeah prolly only a one off but it did leave a not so good impression.

I firmly believe that IF you are committee and you have NOTHING to do with the judge then there shouldnt be a problem with you showing, but dont make a big deal ringside that you are committee.

As a club President, I don't think the Executive committee should show their dogs , but I don't have a problem with them having someone else show their dogs for them.

When we as a club PRESENT a show for exhibitors I think that as HOSTS we should abstain from competing ourselves.

I just think that it is good ethics to create an atmosphere of fair play.

I wont show my dogs at our shows, but will try to find someone to show them for me.

As a committee member, where do you get TIME to show??? there is so much that needs to be done hosting a venue like this

and if you do have time you should be entertaining your guests and attending to their needs.

May sound corny, but Its what I believe your roll as a host is.

At our show, we have a Show Manager to help run the show and organise Stewards etc. The Secretary and President have contact with the judges, but us commitee do not. We set the rings up, most of us Ticket Write (not for our own groups) and take the rings down. I don't see why we should not be able to show our own dogs.

I voted 'other' and these are my reasons

It really depends on where you live and show.

If you are on the committee of major metropolitan shows then NO.

It does not look good when the committee win groups and in show awards.

If you are in an area where only a handful of people show compared to other regions, you may

find that if the committee didn't show and support the entries you may not have a show.
