So we have a lil 11 week old puppy and she is finally sleeping at night when we put her to bed but when it comes to getting our attention ( even if we are sitting next to her) and especially during dinner the barking begins, we have tried ignoring her, tiring her out with playtime first, putting her in her playpen or letting her sit with us, but nothing seems to work. how can we stop the constant barking??

Ignoring her is about all you've got.

You bought the wrong crossbred if you wanted a quiet dog I'm afraid.

oh no she is just a pomeranian

and too be honest she only barks for attention, not that this is a good thing but she doesnt bark at everything. we just want her to realise that barking won't get her what she wants...... how to do this however is another story

Yep, fixed my comment.

I'm no great believer that teaching a dog to speak on cue eliminates unwanted barking.

My dogs all sit on cue.. it doesnt' mean they don't sit any other time.

You have to be absolutely rigorous in ensuring that her attention seeking behaviour is not rewarded... ever.

I teach my noisy one's to "speak". I've found it works well to teach them to bark on command and also to be quiet when told.

Ignoring the dog does work but it's a real test of your patience and sometimes your endurance.

tell me about it, for such a tiny dog she has a big bark, I am worried if i teach her to speak she might not stop

We are doing our best, just thought I would check if there were any other options, or if separating her from us during dinner times etc would work better.

other than the attention seeking she is a lil angel, so friendly to everyone and constantly makes me laugh

How long does she persist barking for?

Today i tied up my puppy and she went on for about 20 mins before finally shutting up.

Wait for 10 secs of silence and then reward.

Patience is key here I think. I was told be a puppy trainer that anywhere between 30 mins to 3 hrs of barking is normal

Ignoring worked for us. Our pup now follows us to the table then dashes off to sit in the far corner of the room. She will stay there in silence for the meal and then follow us back to the kitchen.

We rewarded her for silence initially, then for being quiet and out of the way.

I initially put my puppy in her crate when I ate my dinner. Then I started letting her out and mostly she'd sleep at the end of the couch I was sitting on. I never ever give her any food from my plate when I am eating. Every now and again something leaps off the plate and then I'm punished for it. However if I have a problem she gets to spend time by herself in the laundry or outside until I'm done. Tonight a bit of cheese leapt out of my dinner bowl but she didn't notice. So I quietly relocated bit of cheese to compost bin.

I find that teaching my dog to speak works wonders for shutting her up. Because then she only speaks to get the treat so she waits for you to give the command. She does bark off her own bat at other times, and once I've checked to make sure it's not burglars - I distract her, or tell her enough (with water pistol distraction if necessary), or I ask her to speak.

She likes to bark loudly when I'm making dinner, always has, so teaching her to speak on command was very easy. And bizarrely she will do the least amount of noise she can to get the treat or pat.

We are working on ignoring, she usually barks for about 10 minutes, and she jumps up. if we tell her off for jumping she starts barking again, I can't put her outside as i am still a bit paranoid until she is fully vaccinated, and the laundry is joined to our neighbours so I think they might kill me if I put her in there whilst barking.

so I guess we will stick to the playpen and ignoring and hope she catches on soon ( fingers crossed).

we don't give her any food either - we definitely don't want to encourage her

wow 3 hours. i don't know if I could make it through that every dinner time :D

I feel better knowing that ignoring is the right thing to do though, was beginning to think it was just something i was not doing
