Mastitis

My pups are only feeding morning and night from the mums now. Yesterday morning I heard one of the puppies trying to throw up. By the time I got there to check it stopped and I didnt know which one it was. No vomit. All puppies seem fine and continued to seem fine during the day, eating well, drinking, lively. HOwever whilst out in the sun yesterday morning I noticed one of my girls mammary glands(not the teat itself) was swollen. I felt it, it didnt feel hard or hot at that stage as such, just "full" so I tried to put a couple of puppies on her while she was standing there incase it just needed draining, neither of them would touch that nipple. SO I lay her down and put them all on her and one began to suck that nipple. All done, however it didnt make any difference to the swelling. Then I thought it must be mastitis. I took her temp which was 38.9, so still ok, but I rang and made an appointment with the vet aswell. By the time we got to the vet her temp was 40.3 and the lump was hard and very hot. SO she is on antibiotics, last night while I was at work my OH put them on her for their feed before bed (I was planning to tell him not to put them on her, but forgot in my rush to get to work, they are on 4 solid meals a day). Anyways this morning I wake up to another puppy trying to throw up, and then 2 more followed. No actual vomit from any of them , just the sound of trying to. All still seem lively, healthy, no runny poos and all ate breakfast.

SO after doing a mad panic in my head of "what if its the start of parvo"?? I thought I would get on here and ask if the pups have drank from that teat do you think thats what is causing the attempts to vomit? The milk itself "looks" fine, but I would assume that it isnt? The fact they have only, to my knowledge, tried to vomit in the morning, which is after the night feed, would say its the milk doing it, but I just need a little reassurance. Ive never dealt with mastitis before, so this is a first for me. Im going to get some cabbage leaves today and try those aswell. TIA

When a bitch has mastitis, the milk from that teat is fine for the pups to drink. In fact, it helps with reducing the inflammation if pups will drain the teat. The problem is usually that the teat is so sore that the bitch will not allow the pups to drink from it, so you may need to force her to co-operate. You can also use the hot/cold compress and cold cabbage leaves and also gently massaging the teat yourself helps.

With your pups sounding like they are throwing up, perhaps they are being little glutons and eating too fast and then choking themselves? If not, you might need to refer this to your vet.

Also, while the bitch is on antibiotics, put the pups onto Protexin, so that the antibiotics that they are getting through her milk wont upset their tummies.

Agree with above. If you don't have protexin you can just as easily give them some natural yoghurt. They can lap it themselves if they are old enough, or given off your own finger if not. Great that you caught it early by the sounds of it.

When Dizzy had mastitis the pups wouldn't feed off the nipple when the milk was all pus filled. I used cabbage leaves followed by a heat pack then gently stripped out that boob and reapplied the cabbage leaves!! Once I'd cleared the pus the pups were happy to feed off it. No side effects at all but as she was on antibiotics I had them on yakult twice a day. :D
