julzjc
Hi guys, Does anyone here go to Bankstown school for dogs? Posted in another thread about my Amstaff girl suddenly having a personality change since desexing. Was fantasic on lead, always at lazy heel and never reactive to dogs/social butterfly etc. Now she is becoming reactive to dogs when she is on her lead and dominant over some dogs she meets(at which point she has 'painted on ears').Obviously is a major problem with such a strong dog so its time to go back to basics with her. Will I be able to work on her there? ie have read previously that in other obidiences classes(other states) that barking/hyper dogs have been asked to leave? or should I invest in a one on one trainer? Would like to attend fort-nightly as I would also like to take my husky to obidience/agility and obviously can only take them one at a time untill I sort out Bonnies 'painted on ears'. She has a very high drive so deffinatly want to get her into dog sports(agility, luring, frisbee, flyball etc)but cant untill I fix her distraction with other dogs. Any advice on bankstown school or other places in my area, liverpool? Will easily drive a distance if somewhere else is more suited to Bonnies needs. Thanks for any replies guys. huski
Personally I would recommend a one on one session with a behaviourist... nip it in the bud now and then look at obedience club once you have the problem under control. If you are in NSW Steve from K9 Pro is always highly recommended http://www.k9pro.com.au/pages.php?pageid=

It might be better to do some one on one training to get ontop of you issues- give you some strategies and then go to a club. I would suggest Castle Hill on a Tuesday night. I went to Bankstown with My Kelpie (who WAS uncontrollable) a few years ago and I really got no help at all! I was told by a member (NOT a club official or trainer) that if she had a dog as bad as mine she wouldnt ever take it out!! I think i left the week after. Now she is almost ready to compete in OB!Also their agility is not very good at all!! Castle Hill on the other hand is much more interested in getting your dog to focus first THEN move through obedieance. Whereas bankstown we just keep walking and doing work with them regardless of how they are behaving which really doesnt solve anything. I am only 2 minutes away from bankstown but still make the drive to Castle Hill!! I participate in class but as soon as my dogs get distracted I can move away and dont feel like I am interrupting the flow or getting in the way. Hope this helps! ETA +1 for K9Pro. Anther of my dogs was lunging and barking at people and he has helped so much!! Instead of trying to squash drive he will use it to solve the problem which will give you the framework to do dog sports Edited June 16, 2010 by woofenpup
julzjc
Beautiful! Thanks so much guys. Once i get over this mob of sick kids, ill try getting in contact with Steve from k9 pro, sounds like exactly the type of trainer I am looking for. Would hate for anyone to try and "squash" her drive as, apart from these couple of issues, her drive is amazing in training! Unlike Indie whom has absolutly zero drive except the drive of my cuddles and being stuck like velcro to my leg(nicknamed 'velcro dog'). Think Indie would be more suited to becoming a therapy dog than any sports. Sniff sniff....ok ok,Ill come(after k9pro) to castle hill, dont mind driving but hate driving near the city lol, big scaredy cat but ill come. Woofenpup- Thankyou for letting me know more about bankstown, sorry about your experience with them, exactly the kind of thing I was worried about with Bon. Ill get her issues sorted then come join you at castle hill. Huski-Thankyou for the link and pointing me in the right direction.
