Debarking In South Australia.

There's a couple of young dogs here that are debarked.

I thought it was illegal?

Could anyone please tell me what the deal is with debarking?

I'd like to know too Bon as I've heard the same but know of some debarked dogs.

I believe that it's legal as long as the dog is going to be PTS over its nuisance barking. Or at least, that's how it was about 10 years ago when a neighbour had their dog debarked.

My understanding was that it is/was illegal to take a debarked dog out in public, since it is missing it's first 'line of defence'.

(1) For the purposes of section 13 of the Act, a person ill treats an animal if—

(a) except where a veterinary surgeon has certified in writing that any of the

following procedures is necessary for the control of disease—the person—

(ii) docks the tail of a dog; or

(iii) crops an animal's ear; or

(iv) docks or nicks a horse's tail or docks the tail of an animal of the

genus Bos or Bubalus; or

I'm honestly just curious.

If it's legal; i know a neighbours dog who could really use it, but no. Just curious.

The new leg was brought in during 2000 I think so they may be older dogs debarked.

Lyndsay; I'll ask my vet tomorrow and see if there's anything he knows about it.

Maybe you can just get it done by saying "oh i'll have to get rid of X if i don't" and they'll do it?

Not illegal as far as I understand but they may be some criteria that has to be followed first.

I know breeders here with debarked dogs & they are not the type to break the law, mind you that changes all the time anyway

You need a stat dec signed by a JP stating the dogs barking is a nuicance etc and all other methods of redicign the dogs barking have already bent tried and failed.

Then you can get your dog debarked. I live on the SA/NSW border and thats how ppl here get thier dogs debarked. a letter froma JP and they hop over the border and get the Op done by a SA vet.

I think you also need to prove that there's a Nuisance Order or something out on your dog? Or maybe that's just in NSW, but I thought we needed that plus a Stat Dec saying X will otherwise be pts.
