Divine Angel Posted January 17, 2005 Share Posted January 17, 2005 My dog Patchie was sensitive to it. She would go quiet for about two days after I put it on her. She didn't get a rash or anything, she would mope around and not eat, that kind of thing. I thought it was the smell or something until I saw another dog on Dr Harry that had the same problem. Alibi Posted January 18, 2005 Share Posted January 18, 2005 I actually have a cat that is super sensitive to frontline (and all top spots advantage, revolution). He loses all the hair where the liquid is put and the last time i used it his skin came up in a BIG chemical burn , it was sooooooo sore and raw the poor baby. I really regret not taking photos of this and getting in contact with the company, but i will never use anything like that again on him so he gets program instead. On the other hand i have used frontline top spot and spray on my two toy dogs for years and have never had a problem (although i have recently had an outbreak of fleas while on frontline so we will be moving onto advantage). Instead of changing from the Frontline I advise you check where the recent outbrake is coming from. eg new cats in neighbourhood or new dogs ect. To test wether the Frontline works catch a few fleas, they should die within 24h provided they were on the dog longer than 20 min. And keep in mind neither Frontline nor Advantage are repellents!!!! Alibi Posted January 18, 2005 Share Posted January 18, 2005 Hi Dali-love, I have decided to change to advantage due to a faster knock down rate then the frontline, i also know where they are coming from (have started to take them to the dog park occasionally). I find i have to be really carefull to kill the fleas quickly due to my cat only being on program. I like to see the buggers die quickly. frontline just takes too long. Seven years ago I used Frontline spray on one of my dogs, (I had used it previously without any consequences) and he got a severe allergic reaction and after much veterinary care and specialists doing their all to save him - he died. I have a thick file on Frontline and its adverse reactions - but was wondering if anyone else had had an experience like mine. It was absolutely devastating. schnauzer Posted January 19, 2005 Author Share Posted January 19, 2005 I used the spray on both dogs. They were in the house and did not go outside. He came up in welts all over his body. When I rang my vet they told me to give an antihistamine, which I did. At 7.30 the next day he was at the vet - he stayed there for four days to stabilise. They sent him home and within five minutes of being home I knew he was dying. I took him back immediately and said I wanted a referal to the specialist centre at North Ryde. He had vasculitis which is very rare in a dog. I told them to do anything to save him and they tried everything possible. His whole body just broke down and he would not eat - he became a skeleton in a few days - so very distressing. I suggested putting him down but they thought they would be able to save him - he died that night. As I did not do an authospy it could not be proven that it was the Frontline. We bathed her immediately which seemed to soothe her. I didn't put any treatments on her for a while after that, got a bit nervous about what she might be allergic to. Spoke to the vet, tried her on the advantage, and she was fine. Never tried the frontline again, I put it down to a skin allergy, just like people. My Boy did have a slight reaction to frontline (am trying to think if it was frontline plus or just frontline) either or it was a top spot treatment. Where i put it between the shoulder blades within say an 1/2 hour of it being on him his skin was red, and flaky, just in that one spot but it did seem to spread (not large about the size of a *looks around office* a roll of sticky tape :rolleyes: over a couple more weeks. It took ages to go away, i have never used it again and wont be using it again. He had no problems with advantage just this one time i used frontline. After my dog died, they changed the labelling on Frontline to the effect that it was not suitable for dogs with sensitive skin. Schnauzer, no i dont use the spray didnt no they came in a spray the one i use you just pour it on. It still mite cause the same allergy though, i dont know.
