Posted June 13, 2010 Share Posted June 13, 2010 (edited) This topic always generates some serious and interesting debate, especially when comparing the prices of purebred pups to the going rate for mutts (any progeny of mixed marriages, including "designer dogs"). Yesterday I spent some time reading the puppy listings on the DOL home page and made note of advertised prices......and there were quite a lot, across a broad range of breeds. After compiling them, I have to say that on the whole, pedigree dogs are not expensive and there are some absolute bargains to be had, especially in older pups (4-8 months) where the price is often reduced considerably. The average price of a pedigree puppy is nowhere near the recently touted $2000, in fact I'd say it's closer to half that. Other surprising findings....the price of French Bulldog puppies has leapt from $2000 to $3500 in the past two years and the price of blue staffies just keeps getting more ridiculous. It surely can't be because they're rare because they're far from it. Here is my list. Where there's a number in brackets next to the price, it's the number of breeders advertising at that price. I wrote the prices as I found them, so they aren't in numerical order. I know for a fact my friend bought 2 cocker spaniel x poodles for $1200 each from Pets Paradise I dont know why it is taboo to talk prices. There is one Doberman pup advertised at $800 so he got included. No other ads had prices. I was more interested in the average price of purebred, pedigree puppies......an across the board look, not necessarily individual breeds. I know what Australian Shepherds cost, I own 3 of them, but I didn't include them because there aren't any ads with prices currently on DOL. There were a few weeks ago.....there were some being sold for $800, but they weren't there yesterday so they didn't make the list. Some of the breeders I had been in contact with were asking $800 or $1200. Lili was a bit cheaper because she was part of a large litter (13 I think!) and there were a few pups left at 11 weeks old. You're right about the range within a breed....like Tibbies may be less or more than $500. With the voice of bias , I find this amazingly economic for one of the soundest, most charming breeds from registered sources. Every tib I've adopted has been an adult & I had to force the breeder to take any money at all. I get so many comments from strangers about what beautiful looking dogs they are....& with what gorgeous temperaments they have. But they came that way from their breeders! A vet remarked to me once, how he couldn't understand why people buy those highly expensive 'designed' small dogs, when there were top little p/b dogs like tibs available. I second that! Cocker Spaniels, Labs, Poodles, Cavs....and then the more exotic, rarer breeds like Lagottos, German Spitz....and they (by and large) are NOT expensive. I would have happily paid $1200 though. I paid $600 for Benson (limited reg) and $500 for Dusty (main reg). I have read on DOL breeders who seem to abhor 'price shopping'. Why is price taboo??? Not sure but surely genuine people naturally wish to know price to see if a chosen breed is within their means....I dont think in all cases it necessarily means a 'time waster' or intention to negotiate. In many respects i think it great to understand price- unpapered puppies of undetermined parentage yet a particular breed get such prices in well known pet shop chains.....people need to understand that the 'bargain' puppy is definitely not all that. I agree. Though I must say, I didnt find that asking about price was met with any hostility when I was looking. But that wasn't my first question of course. If I was a breeder, I'd be offended too if all I got was "How much?" . For the record in my enquiries, I found that Finnish Lapphunds were $1500 and Golden Retrievers $1200 for upcoming litters.
