Labkisses
Hi guys I was just wondering what the process is when you send your bitch for a stud service interstate? How does it all work? How long do you leave your bitch at the stud owners property? What are rough costs to have your bitch serviced and kept with the stud owner? What happens if your bitch fails to fall pregnant? Is it common to send your bitch away or interstate? Thanks in advance
Sandra777
If the bitch is cool and relaxed about being in a strange place & stands around 10-16 days I would send her when she's about a week in season and bring her back a day or two after she was mated. Some breeders will charge board and/or a fee to collect/drop off at the airport; some won't so this needs to be discussed up front. There are not hard and fast rules about this or about how much is "right". The stud fee itself is generally no different for an interstate bitch than for the bitch around the corner. If the bitch isn't pregnant then it depends on the stud agreement what happens - free return, fee not paid until the litter is born, refund etc
kinsella
Would AI be easier than a live mating interstate? Or more trouble? I've only ever been the dog side of any breeding (apart from small bursts of puppy sitting) and just curious.
Labkisses
There are no vets with facilities for AI where we live, so live mating are the only option unfortunately
Silverblue
Make sure the right dog serves the bitch ( just been through that ), I owuld want to know that there is only the chosen sire on the property at the time.
Bisart Dobes
I would never send my bitch away to be mated. If I couldn't travel with her to the dog of my choice I would get chilled semen and do an AI. Just my personal choice .
cowanbree
As I live in a reasonably isolated area unless I use my own dogs I always send my bitch away. You do have to place an enormous amount of trust in the people you are sending the dog to, after all they have my baby and above all else I am trusting that she will be well cared for. If I don’t know and trust them I wouldn’t use their dog no matter how gorgeous. That said, I have never had an issue. My dogs have always been well cared for and there has never been any huge issues. I try to send them up about 2-3 days prior to mating and they are sent home as soon as they are mated. I have never been charged board or airport pick up fees. Most breeders would always have mutliple males on the property and I have never doubted for a minute that the correct dog was used. Mind you I only deal with breeders I know and trust
Silverblue
I doubt I ever will again either, the careless mistake by 1 breeder has set my breeding plans back 5 years, from now on I will be accompaning my girls, or like I just did the male will come here, thanks to a very understanding caring stud dog owner. Lyla
Just a question to anyone who has used AI: from the litters I have seen born from AI there always seems to be a much smaller litter than through natural mating. Is this usually the case, or is it just coincidence? Edited July 9, 2010 by je2910
Joan of Arc
Distance and work mean that sometimes people dont really have an option but to send thier girls away. I flew my girl to the stud dog this time and she was gone one week exactly. Very very reputable breeder, I trust that person and doubt they would do anything to damage thier own reputation. After all they have signed a service certificate to state who the sire is so its thier prefix at stake just as much if not more than mine. As for litters from AI, our other girl had AI for her last litter and produced 11 pups
myzchev
I doubt I ever will again either, the careless mistake by 1 breeder has set my breeding plans back 5 years, from now on I will be accompaning my girls, or like I just did the male will come here, thanks to a very understanding caring stud dog owner. I was also in the fortunate position that the stud dog owner sent their dog over to me. The stud muffin was in Tasmania and I live in Perth, WA. All up it cost me about $850.00 to get an adult male Belgian Shepherd from Tas and back again. I also paid for all his upkeep while he was here. I would NEVER send my bitches away to be mated. I am more than willing to spend the dollars getting the boys over here. I also really get to know the dog while he is here. The boy I used last October was here about 10 days. My suggestion is not to leave it to the last minute but start looking for a stud dog at least 6 months prior to when you want to do the mating and try and build up some sort of friendship with the owner. I gave the stud dog owner about 10 months notice that I was interested in using her dog. Hope this helps:)
Labkisses
Thanks everyone for your advice and opinions. It so hard when there are no studs available to your liking in a remote area. We hope to purchase our own boy later on in a few years, but thats a while away. I'm a bit worried how my girl will be away from home, she is very friendly but I wouldnt want to stress her out....hmmm so many things to weigh up ...
