nadz Posted June 6, 2010 Share Posted June 6, 2010 I have read a few threads so I know I'm not alone but my little man is getting desexed tomorrow and I can't help but worry!! I don't want to leave him there alone the poor mite! How irrational am I?! hahaha I didn't get much information from the vet when I called, I was too distracted by my worry! I don't feed him breakfast in the morning because of the anaesthetic? He is getting dropped off at 9.30 and the operation will happen around 11 apparently.. Is there anything I need to have ready for when he gets home? I got him some nutro wet food for a dinner treat and a few different chews to keep him occupied over the next few days. I will pick up a soft elizabethan collar if he needs one, my sister said lanolin on the stitches can stop licking too? Has anyone heard anything about that? The Ark Posted June 6, 2010 Share Posted June 6, 2010 I'm pretty sure our Aussie Shepherd boy didn't actually notice that anything had happened.... We tried to keep him quiet, but 24 hours was his limit! My husband took his stitches out tonight and all is fine!! He didn't look like licking/chewing his stitches - I wonder (and I am just wondering....) if dogs are more likely to chew their little op site if they are contained for extended periods than if they are just allowed to move around as normal? He will be fine nadz, dont you worry thats the best you can do for him before, just so he associates the vet with happy thoughts, and after he will be so happy to see his mommy I am sure that will be all he needs to be well on his way to mending. persephone Posted June 6, 2010 Share Posted June 6, 2010 castration of male puppies is only a minor hiccup - it is not invasive like a spey- skin incision only .. so they don't really notice much You may not need your nutro dinner treat- often after anaesthetic they wil not want to eat- and it can sometimes make them vomit if they do- so don't push him to eat or drink. If he's not eager to, then he will probably just need warmth and quiet tonight... no fussing or extra work.. just see if he wants toilet- and put him to bed .Easy! Try & stop him running/bouncing/jumping up onto furniture etc for a few days .. obviously- this sort of activity can stretch skin/stitches ... no breakfast or water this morning- in case of vomiting under anaesthetic ( which is not a good thing ) ... and the vet may give you post-op instructions when you collect your boy. aussielover Posted June 7, 2010 Share Posted June 7, 2010 We usually keep our dog castrates overnight and they all seem to settle fairly well and most eat some dinner. Castrates are less likely to lick and chew their stiches out than speys. Its a fairly simple procedure usually only taking 10-20 minutes so try not to worry too much. _PL_ Posted June 7, 2010 Share Posted June 7, 2010 Boys seem to cope really well. If both testes are descended (you can see them quite clearly LOL), then it's really just a snip and a stitch or two. A couple of years ago my own boy who was 5 months and well into being an absolute whirlwind of destruction and play - he went in and I was actually looking forward to just one evening of a slightly quieter dog. Ha! Dream on. Picked him up and the little horror hadn't even noticed the desex. He was wiggling and jumping as usual. Got home, tore up some kitchen paper, ate a huge dinner, bit the strap off my bra and scattered toys all over the floor. Business as usual. (He also had an umbilical hernia op at same time) and microchipping all whilst under. He was snuggly, cuddly and just wanted to be near us for 24 hours afterwards but then was right as rain. He licked his stitches once, scratched them a few times and apart from that, didn't even realise they were there. We had pain meds for him from the vet but he didn't need them. He also is on Royal Canin Intestinal for his sensitive stomach anyway, so we just fed him that as normal. I did worry all day though, but when we went to pick him up and the vets assistant carried him out all floppy and snoozy, he just wagged his tail, made his normal little puppy tired mewing noise and put his head in the crook of my shoulder Susan Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Charlie came home and ate a huge meal, did his business, played a little with his toys and slept for a few hours. Woke up and things were back to normal again. YAY! and i'm feeling a bit better because the vet would have called by now if anything out of the ordinary happened so looking forward to picking up my boy I'm curious to see the damage though! He's so small (3.8kgs) so his manhood was quite small as well (HAHAHAHAH). Not expecting a big battle wound. I'm glad it only needs to happen once in a lifetime though haha! koalathebear Posted June 7, 2010 Share Posted June 7, 2010 We felt so bad for Elbie the evening we picked him up - it was worse because he had ringworm so had to be kept in seclusion and I kept worrying that he'd think he had done something wrong! It was the education night for puppy classes and they were bringing Elbie out for a wee and one of the other owners asked the vet's nurse: "Will our puppy be very zonked after the desexing?" The vet's nurse said: "Probably - the anaesthesia may make him groggy for a while." At that moment, Elbie dashed past being chased after by Steph the other vet's nurse - as he hurtled around the room and into the yard, the first vet's nurse said: "Unless of course you're Elbie who doesn't seem to have suffered any ill-effects at all." Elbie seemed totally fine after his desexing - he licked at his stitches now and then but not excessively and we tried to distract from the licking. We also sectioned off the stairs for the first few days after his operation - although the little rascal found a way to bypass the top of the stairs and jump down to the second stair We followed the instructions from the vet but honestly I think the only people suffering were us because we felt so guilty for having left him there and for having had him neutered Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

He isn't even groggy, he was crying at the clinic because i wouldn't let him run around with the old labrador that is there (usually he gets 5 mins with her after a visit as a treat lmao). He is trying to remove his bandage from the IV (i'll take that off later), and he is licking his privates but if that gets excessive i'll head back to the vet and get him the collar (that would just look ridiculous on a mini dachshund lol).
