Hi,

My maiden bitch is due the end of this month and she has obviously been getting more and more itchy or uncomfortable around the belly. Last night she kept me awake with her constant fanny licking and boob/belly licking. I'm interested to hear what other breeder's remedies are for this.

Hi,

My maiden bitch is due the end of this month and she has obviously been getting more and more itchy or uncomfortable around the belly. Last night she kept me awake with her constant fanny licking and boob/belly licking. I'm interested to hear what other breeder's remedies are for this.

my favourite remedy is baby bum cream on the belly & boobs. It's actually zinc & castor oil cream...VERY safe as you can use it on your own baby, but it just seems to take the red out and soothe the area. I have used this 'miracle cream' for all sorts of things including itchy foals, dogs & humans. You can buy it at the supermarket in the baby section...alternatively you can pay substatially more for it through the produce store & it's called 'White Healer'.

A friend of mine had a bloodhound bitch heavy in whelp with the same issue...I told her about it & she said it worked very well....she was even going to tell her vet about it!!!

I hope that helps.

Zinc and castor oil cream isn't as non-toxic for ingestion as it is to put on a baby bum.

Using Lansinoh is 100% safe and totally non-toxic. It is used in breast feeding mothers with nipple soreness etc and is Lanolin based. You can get it from any chemist.

If she is licking her boobies it probably means she is producing milk so is close to having her bubbas :-)

The remedy is to whelp :) Sorry couldn't resist!!

Uh.. I don't think so... as I said in my OP she is due to whelp the END of the month so no milk yet for sure!!

Are you sure she's itchy? Sounds to me like she might be licking/chewing her coat out?

Some bitches do this prior to pups so they've got nice soft clean skin around the teats. Saves clipping

Hi T-Time,

No not my breed they have smooth hairless bellies to begin with as they are very fine coated dogs. The girls seem to start the belly licking/nibbling about the time that the pups begin to become a bit active. It's kinda of like all that activity makes them uncomfortable, I suppose the skin is getting tighter around the belly. Thanks for the idea though.

If she's doing this because of puppy movements.. and there is no visible spots/rash - I wouldn't put anything topical on....as this then may lead her to try & lick it OFF

She could be just a bit uncomfortable/with twinges....and be doing the only thing she knows to try & relieve it. If she is otherwise healthy- and there is no rash.. I would be making sure she is getting gentle exercise to help keep her muscles loose and active.... and maybe some distraction in the form of bones etc .

Thanks Persephone. She gets plenty of exercise in the day and so it's night time in bed that's the problem when all is still and quiet. If I stroke her she loves it but I can't stroke her all night to destract her, I need the sleep!
