W Sibs
This morning, I went to look for Emmy and found her in the backyard hiding in the grass eye-ing 2 birds in the yard. She was laying very very still, then will creep slowly forward, then back on laying still again. She just started stalking them and never lost her focus on them. Before I could called out to her, she went to launch at one of the bird (the bird got away). She is still a puppy... so I've never seen this behaviour with a puppy so young before.. so is this normal? I've never seen her so focus before. It was very impressive. Is this prey drive? I have a feeling when Emmy gets older... i'll be finding dead birds in the yard. She's amazingly fast and my little girl can fly!! Thankfully, Emmy doesn't stalk Charlie... I'm not a fan of birds.. dead or live i have a smallish dog with big prey drive. if you want to train her in drive look at K9Pro's training in drive course http://www.k9pro.com.au/products.php?produ...ve-%252d-Basics you may want to encourage this as i have seen dogs trained in drive and they are very impressive and they seem to get such joy out of training. pie
Trixie stalks Kyzer, he'll be trotting along in the yard minding his own business and you can see her laying as flat as she can waiting, then creeping, then flat again, then when he gets close enough she pounces! It's always a game though and usually ends in zoomies, he'll usually see her stalking him and deliberately wander over or run off inviting chase Kyzer has never stalked anything, he just rushes right in. corvus
Kivi was just like that. Only he was never fast enough to bother the birds much. After a while he developed a weird relationships with one of the local magpies. He would sit very, very still and watch it move around the yard. If it flew away he got all disappointed. Kivi still pounces and stalks, but he doesn't have much prey drive, so I don't think it necessarily means Emmy has lots of prey drive. A better indicator might be her reaction to moving objects or how much she likes to tug or rip things up. Kivi was always very gentle with his mouth, although he gets excited by moving objects. Erik was a crazy biter and tugger and he's my drivey one, but he really does not get as excited by the mousies as Kivi does, and he's no pouncer, although he stalks like a BC.
