Peeling Toe Nails

Hi just wanting to know if anyone ahs had this issue with their dogs or knows anything about it?

I sold a toy poodle 4 years ago and the owner has contacted me asking if I know anyting about it. I can't find any information so I am asking you guys.

From what I understand the top layer is peeling off leaving the rest of the nail which would be very tender. The vet said a zinc deficiency but I am not so sure. Any ideas?

I can only ask Darkrai.

Just wondering if the nails are 'white' and if the poodle is living in a high rainfall area.....if so, could be like one of my standards. He has brittle nails that crack and peel when the weather has been wet, wet, wet (like the last year). Anyway, I've found that keeping them clipped as far back as possible and rubbing in a bit of oil helps.

Thank you for the suggestions. He lives in Tasmania so it is possible that the area he is in is quite wet.. Also I will pass on the suggestion of immune system. Some blood tests may be in order.

I have asked him for some more information and some pics so hopfeully that will help.

The dog is black and has black nails. The front nails are very short and stubby now and very sensitive to shave around.

a biotin supplement has been known the help giants with nails that are brittle and fall off.

Thanks for that Becks :cheer: I will let the owner know. Certainly can't hurt :cheer:

PoodleFan has suggested it may be Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy or SLO for short. This fits with all the symptoms and with what Becks previously mentioned.

I will pass this on to the owners and get them to visit the vets once again.

Big thanks PF :cheer: What would I do without you? :cheer:

Sorry PF - I stuffed up by putting this in the breeder forum :cheer: and you are not able to reply in here :cheer:
