Stomach Cancer Or Kidney Failure-update

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My best friends Pug(Doug the 2nd) was rushed to the vet yesterday after constantly throwing up,shaking, drinking all 2 big bowls of water within a few minutes and throwing up even more.

He is in at the vets still for more tests and and most likely will be for 2 more days. The Vet has said that it is most likely Stomach Cancer,or Kidney failure.

Does anyone have any experience with with either?

we are all heartbroken and terribly worried. He is 8 & 1/2 years old and he is the whole reason we all came to love Pugs so much.

Thanks all.

So sorry to hear this. My mini poodle had kidney failure (ontop of Cushing's disease). My vet pulled him back from the first failure with medication, but the second time we could reverse what was happening. None of this is very helpvul to you, but I am sending good vibes out for Doug, poor lad.

Kidney failure is diagnosed through urine and blood tests. It's normally not sudden, though. Generally, there are symptoms previously, like constant throwing up and soft/runny stools. The kidney failure my dog had is very specific so I can only speak in generalities about 'regular' renal failure (if there is such a thing).

Thanks Sheridan,

Apparently he has been throwing up occasionally for a month or so in the mornings, but not every moring, they thought it must have been something he ate,as he gets alot of table scraps,or they though it could be some sort of anxiety,as they have just had their first baby 6 weeks ago.

One of my little pound rescues arrived very sick and was diagnosed with kidney failure. They put her on meds but told me she wouldn't live very long. I took her to the All Natural Vet at Russell Lea who consulted with my other vet re the blood test results. They prescribed Chinese herbs and if I hadn't seen it for myself, I'd never have believed it. She became much better (stayed on special kidney diet), her hair grew and became healthy, she ran around the dog park - she weighed about 2.5 kilos and was 12-13 yrs old probably. She lived with me for a year until an awful stomach virus weakened her and her kidneys finally failed.

UPDATE-

Hi all,Good news on Doug.

vet has said he has a severe ear infection, that is causing severe vertigo, thats why he is vomiting so much.Cancer has been ruled out,the Kidney tests come back today,so hopefully they are clear, and the ear infection can be cured.

He was leaning on his cage, with his head tilted, and he was shaking when my mate went to see him yesterday.Vet said that this is the 2nd worse case of Vertigo(if thats what it turns out to be)that he has ever seen, the worst he said he had a pug that lay flat on his side, and tried to run and walk while laying on his side, thinking he was standing upright.

Such a relief so far, just hoping todays tests come back with a good result.

Thanks all.

Good news! It sounds very much like vestibular disease. My kelpie had it when she was around 12yrs and I thought it was a stroke. My vet was wonderful and took one look when we came in and said don't worry its not a stroke and it'll be alright when we were in the waiting room. Its often called geriatric vestibular disease and its more like an infection of the nerve endings of the inner ear. Majority of cases are totally cured with supportive treatment only. Ruby was left with a slight head tilt but thats all. The give away is flicking eyes and vertigo and throwing up as they can't keep their balance. Hope it all goes well for poor Doug.

So glad he's going to be okay, can sympathise with him though as I've had a really bad case of vertigo in the past. Could not stand up without keeping hold of something, and when my sister took me to the DR I started to keel over as soon as she let go of me. Plus as sick as a dog. Hope he's back to his normal self soon and that he hasn't given you too many grey hairs.
