pomchi Posted May 31, 2010 Share Posted May 31, 2010 Hi I have had my new puppy home for two days now, and she has spent every minute with us since she has come home, today i have tried to leave her in her playpen for a few minutes whilst i did some chores upstairs, I knew she would bark the breeder told me she was very vocal :p. But she doesn't stop barking she has water, food, chew toys her bed and blankets but she still cries and barks. I played with her for about 30 mins before leaving her to tire her out but obviously that didn't work. I just dont think i can leaving her barking and whining for so long, but I also want to break the habit because i will be back at work soon and she will be alone for a few hours. any suggestions???? You could train him to "sit", "drop" etc. then he will sleep so well. =D My puppy could "sit", "down", "shake" and "in"to his crate on command when he was 10 weeks old. pomchi Posted June 1, 2010 Author Share Posted June 1, 2010 wow at 10 weeks thats amazing, I am lucky if link can stay still for a minute let alone getting her to sit she did so well last night went to bed at 11pm and cried for about 20 mins and didnt wake up till 6am. but at the moment i have gone upstairs and left her in her play pen and she has been barking for 45 mins so far, lucky i introduced her to the neighbours yesterday. On Sunday he cried and threw a tantrum for nearly 50 minutes before he quit and just sat there for a few minutes like the good boy i hope him to be. nicolatu Posted June 1, 2010 Share Posted June 1, 2010 Teaching her to sit is not that difficult. Go youtube and search for this trainer from San Diego call kikopup. Her training advice is so good. Mindy is alot more vocal than clover (my old dog). she cries for attention (doesn't get it until she is quiet though). Nothing seems to tire her though- she already knows sit, shake hands and come (after her first day!). She is walking on the lead pretty well too. she gets ALOT of play time and is learning to retrieve a ball. Toilet training is going OK but she was going on the tiled area not the grass, so now I have to put her on the lead and stand in the grass. she cries and barks in the car NON STOP though which is annoying- I think she doesn't like the movement because she sort of stops when the car stops. AM DREADING putting her to bed tonight! I know she is going to bark and carry on- its just for how long that will be interesting. I don;t know whether to leave her in the laundary in her crate, or to have her crate beside my bed- what do people think? she can't be with me at night forever so am I just prolonging the pain? di_dee1 Posted June 2, 2010 Share Posted June 2, 2010 My advice is to continue as you wish it to be later or confusion sets in and you may have to go through it all again. I would ignore the barking and reward when quiet. Do not go in there when she is crying or barking as she will learn that this gets the results she wants and you would be reinforcing this behaviour. becks Posted June 2, 2010 Share Posted June 2, 2010 Get pup used to you coming and going throughout the day, don't make a big deal of you going (ie no trying to tire out the pup before you head off - it just makes your absense more noticable to the pup). I find it best to restrict pup to part of the house, so you can easily come and go, then when you do return to where the pup is, don't go straight to the pup, carry on with your jobs and if pup is quiet, go and have a game or some quiet time with the pup. pomchi Posted June 4, 2010 Author Share Posted June 4, 2010 My plan was to let her sleep in our room in a crate, but she has no interest in the crate and if we are in the room she just wants to play.so i set up a play pen for her downstairs and she sleeps in there at night, she is pretty good overnight but during the day if i leave the room, the tantrums begin. Jaxx'sBuddy Posted June 4, 2010 Share Posted June 4, 2010 plan to make the pup successful. for instance you know she will bark when you leave her so wait nearby and when she takes a breathe for a few seconds, go in and give her a treat then leave and repeat often. this way she will be quiet for longer as she is learning that quiet gets rewards. you need to be really careful to get the timing right. and if you do what becks said and go in and out then only treat when she is quiet and ignore her, ie no eye contact if she is barking or making any noise Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
