Puppies And The Rain

Oh dear how would Hoover go as a working dog, tied up with a bit of tin shed and a hessian sack if lucky LOL!

Mindy is only on one meal a day (morning). I am lucky in that I don't have to get wet going outside with Mindy when it is raining. I just stand by the door and tell her to do "quick quicks" and she is quite prompt about it and will come straight back in after.

No idea! He grew up in this shed with his brothers and sisters and the only toy they had was one ball

When we took Elbie out herding we were bemused to see the working dogs all locked away in relatively small outdoor pens – no bedding, not blankets, no heating – just one dog per concrete pen with wire mesh out the front. They seemed happy and healthy but I couldn't help contrasting how pampered household pet dogs are compared to their working counterparts.

OH and I used to joke about how funny the 'conversations' must have been between Elbie and Hoover when Hoover first arrived: "Well back on the farm – we didn't have this or that" and perhaps Hoover thought Elbie was a pampered city slicker.

When we went to see the herding trials at Bredbo, the working dogs were all locked up in tough-looking, sometimes rusty metal crates on the backs of trucks – we got a lot of looks for our bright blue, soft crate from Top Buy. :)

Heh heh. This is what Elbie normally does. But when it's raining, we can only do this with the first time, after that he'll stand by the door and look at us as if to say: "What – you crazy? It's raining!" ;) When we had just one dog, Elbie would generally go and do his business and come right back. With two dogs, we have to do a little bit of herding to get them both there because if one of them gets distracted and goes dashing off into the yard, the other one will follow.

I have a water baby. He happily trots along in the rain, no drama.

He's on house arrest with all this rain and when the OH got home last night he dashed straight outside and did a record breaking wee. Then decided it was an awesome time to do zoomies around our mudpile yard. He's gotten quite used to the towel and only tries to "reanimate" them occasionally.

I've just heard thunder... here comes the promised storm!

I'm in exactly the same position, Spitz + Rain = Happy Muddy dogs!

Only issue is I'm trying really hard to keep my lot clean for the show this weekend.....

We got a bit of sun earlier today but the storm has hit now, ugh I wish it would go away for a few days!

My puppy isn't bothered by rain much, he will still go out and pee on the grass when asked too, and he gets an extra treat when it's wet.

My adult dog is a completely different story. She will hardly even leave the house when it rains, even to go out in the covered patio area which doesn't get wet. She will NOT pee on the grass when it rains or is excessively wet (after raining), and whenever it rains she suddenly has "accidents" in the house. She is 100% housetrained the rest of the time.

So I have decided to just get pee pads for her for when it rains. It's easier than forcing her to go outside, because I don't even know what times she will need to go, and she doesn't pee on cue. One of my agility instructors says she uses pee pads for one of her dogs (1 of 4) when it rains too.

Ugh Luna hates the rain - she gives me sad eyes all the time. She will take a step, pick up her paw and stare at me. Once she is pushed into the bushes she will complete the task and run to the door

She has even learnt to "pretend" to pee as she knows she won't get inside without squatting!

Oh I hate the soggy poo pick!!!!

We've had a lot of rain here too - and Max even peed inside last night. I wasn't looking at him, then heard this familiar noise.... (my brain was going.. I know that noise, what is it?....) oh yeah - that's the sound of a dog wizzing on the floor. Super!

Meanwhile, this afternoon I take him for a walk near a creek (at least I think its a creek, it may just be floodwaters ha!) - and you couldn't keep him out of it! Swimming and leaping, rolling around and frolicking. What's wrong with my dog?

No accidents for us yesterday thank goodness. The dogs were outside for a lot of the day because we were both out - they have kennels and a dry place to hang out but they of course don't like being out there when it's raining. When they finally got inside, they did NOT want to go out again and last night poor OH stood for 45min in the rain trying to make Hoover toilet before bed. We KNEW that he had to go because he'd not gone since dinner but the dog was so stubborn :) Thankfully Elbie, once on lead and led to Poo Corner hastily complied with what was expected of him before scampering back inside again!

Last night was a shocker though - LOTS and LOTS of thunder, lightning and extremely heavy, noisy rain. I woke up, worried that the dogs would be freaking out as it was their first storm that was that noisy. At one point, the lightning was so bright and flashy that it looked like daylight! Both our dogs were super quiet in their crates though. Elbie looks uncertain during the day when there's a storm but it seems like the crate 'filters' out a lot of Storm Intensity. ;)

If the rain continues through all of December, I'm really not sure what we're going to do. :) I guess the doggies will just have to deal.
