Frozen To The Spot

Recommended Posts

I would often find my old Poodle Rocky frozen to the spot from time to time,he would be just standing in a room or whatever and would only move if he was distracted by a loud noise or a touch. Some days he did it multipul times others not at all. My now 14 yr old Poodle is starting to do the same thing ,though not to the same degree yet .Both dogs were/are almost blind and almost deaf .Anyone else seen this in a dog or have any thoughts. Rocky was a healthy 15 yr old until the day he suddenly had a huge seizer and had to be PTS. Shanania is a active dog for her age and in good health, just some arthritis problems.

I think its just a symptom of developing senility Rochani - they just 'zone out' for a while.

Is there anything that can be done to help ? I'm sure she isn't aware of zoning out ,but it worries me.

You could ask your vet however I suspect it is just old age.

I knew it was time to let one of my oldies go when she would just stand in the rain, not moving, just getting wet.

Very sad to see but I knew it was time when that started happening.

Vets say that when they stop eating is the marker but there are also other considerations.

There are some supplements that are meant to be useful. A friend of mine swears her dog got a new lease of life on the Hills B/D food.

My old girl is on Vivitonin, which has helped her a little, some dogs respond really well on it though so it is well worth a try, have a chat to your Vet about it.

It increases the blood supply to the brain and heart.

It is so sad to see them getting old...............it breaks my heart................I just treat every day I have with her as a blessing.

Have often seen this is old dogs staying in the kennels - just standing and looking at the wall perhaps - I have always felt it was a form of dementia as it is not dissimilar to what you sometimes see with old people.

A girlfriends old pom/chi cross has been showing this for about 2 years and she is about 15 or 16.

They certainly don't seem to be stressed by it - although they will appear a little startled when they first step out of it. I have a little garden area where the oldies can go out for some activity - they seem to be happy out there and will just follow the fence along to the doorway if they get a little confused.

I wouldnt worry about it too much, except be careful if she is anywhere new that she is not out in the open to much.
