Perth Dog Ownership Information Needed

My partner and I, the dogs and the cat, are all moving over to Perth from the UK in 6 weeks time!

Where we live at the moment (rural NE Scotland) it is very open and we can take the dogs anywhere, so are used to empty beaches and parks with no restrictions. On a reccie trip to Perth back in January I realized dog ownership in Oz will be a bit more restrictive, so can anyone point me in the right direction of 'dog friendly' places to go?

We will initially be staying in the Mount Lawley area, so would be grateful for info on places we take the dogs round there. Also 'dog parks' don't really exisit in the UK......are they to be avoided or do they provide some of the only off-lead areas to take your dogs?

I will also be in need of a groomer, doesn't have to be in the Mount Lawley area, but must be patient and understanding with the dogs (both are rescues with very poorly socialised starts to life, I'm working on that but they have their 'issues') Their current groomer hasn't had any real problems with them, but she is firm and won't take any nonsense from them.

They are currently fed a mix of raw and a 'wet' food called NatureDiet http://www.naturediet.co.uk/ While they are in quarrentine I would like them to be fed something close to NatureDiet. Can you point me in the direction of similar products in Oz? I was very please to see raw pet food in most supermarkets, in the UK it can be tricky to source raw food.

Also vet reccomendations would be good.

They will be in quarantine for 30 days - it will be the first time in my life I'm gonna be pet free.....it's going to be very strange. Byford is apparently dropping its visiting days down to 2 a week from 3 which is a pain, I'll miss my little buddies while they're in there

Also I know she's not a dog but if anyone can recommend cat food similar to Orijen i.e high meat content, low grain http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/products/catki...ngredients.aspx that would be great. Unlike the dogs my siamese is very fussy when it comes to food

I'm very much looking forward to moving over, just wish we could fast forward 7 weeks and just be there already Any other advice on dog ownership in Oz will be gratefully recived

I don't know Mt Lawley, but there are places on the river around there where dogs can go off lead. The dog park question has all sorts of angles and I think everyone has to sort it out for themselves. If there are irresponsible people around, with DA dogs, dog parks can get awful. But generally there is some time of day where the 'baddies' aren't around and you can work out a routine that lets you meet other dogs, play a bit, and have a run and swim.

You'll find lots of good food options if you like raw stuff. Australia is awash in meat. I buy in bulk from an outfit that exports kangaroo meat and makes dog rolls (cooked stuff . . . kinda yucky but better than canned food). You can get good basic ground chicken for less than $1.50/kg . . . about twice that for red meat. Or if you're happy to pay more, you'll find frozen BARF patties, etc. in the chainstore pet/garden shops (CityFarmers and Better Pets and Gardens). Try google on the names in parens and you'll probably find some description of what foods they carry. If you go to the shire website (xxx.wa.gov.au, where xxx is the shire name) and find some search option, you should be able to find dog park information).

Hope your trip over goes well. You're right about Australia being more restrictive for dogs, definitely no dog walking in the National Parks.

There is a great place for dog walking not too far from Mt Lawley - Yokine Reserve. It's a huge area and lots of dog walkers use it, I went there regularly before I moved and never had a problem with aggressive dogs/owners. There is a groomer in North Perth who might suit your dogs needs - PM me when you get here and I will send you her name.

I think some of the pet food suppliers may make something similar to NatureDiet, there is a place in Oxford St in Leederville that might be worth a look.

I can't believe Byford is restricting it's visiting even more, I'm sure it was Mon - Fri a few years ago, thankfully it's only 30 days.

As I live in Brisbane, I'm not much use to you..but I did want to say welcome and to comment on your obvious love for your rescue dogs if you're prepared to bring them to this part of the world...it's excellent that you care so much!

Riverside Gardens in Bayswater is fantastic, it's a huge dog park on the river with a beach area. Most dogs that go there are friendly and it's not too far from Mt Lawley. If your dogs are a bit dog shy there's practically nobody there during work hours.

There are also a lot of dog beaches in Perth.

Hi and Welcome. I had my cats in Byford last year and wasn't allowed to feed my own food, not sure if that has changed?? When you go visit them for the first time be sure to take loads of blankets and that as it really is very cold there in winter, my small cat spent the entire time in her heated igloo because she was soo cold.

Riverside Gardens is lovely, the dogs have a great time there and I have never seen a fight.

I'm in the Mt Lawley area. There are only a few offlead parks around here and none are fenced. One park close to Mt Lawley (more North Perth area) to AVOID is Woodville Reserve on Fitzgerald Street. The regulars are very clique-y and unwelcoming and it's a popular place for stupid owners with dogs that should not be offlead. I've seen a lot of aggressive dogs and owners.

A nice place is directly across the road from Mt Lawley Senior High School. There's two big ovals with just a path separating them, poo bags available and I'm pretty sure there's a tap they can drink from. Just avoid going when it's starting and ending times for school because some of the parents take their dogs and just let them go wild.

If you pack the dogs up in the car a nice place to visit is Lake Monger. Have to be on lead but it is a really enjoyable walk with lots of bird life to observe.

Thank you Unfortunately we had to re-home 2 other dogs and 2 cats before coming over, it's been heartbreaking but they are all settled in very good homes and are happy and probably not giving us a second thought

Thank-you :D I'm a bit concerned about the temperature, especially as Louis is hairless. I have already sent some pj's for him so they will have something to put on him when he arrives. He's not allowed to fly with clothes on so will arrive nekkid We visited Byford in Jan and they said they were happy to feed whatever food I provided, even frozen raw - but no bones

You could try Barf Patties - you used to be able to get them from City Farmers or Better Pets and Gardens

Hey Tanya, Welcome! Not doggy related but where in the North East are you from? Im from Aberdeenshire, moved over to Sydney in 2005, deffinatly a very different doggy lifestyle here. Miss having 7miles of beach all to myself and my dogs anytime of day, getting used to it but feel sorry for my dogs not being able to have much offlead runs. Like previous posers, dog parks are so so, great if you can find a quiet time to go but there are quite a few idiots that go there and spoil the place. I only take my dogs at 5am or on rainy days so hopefully no one else is there,had/seen to many incidents with DA(dog aggressive) dogs that supposedly"love other dogs and have never done this before" pfffft whatever.

Hi and small world I live Aberdeenshire too, north of Ellon I'm not a native though, just lived here for 4 years

Yup the dogs are gonna miss this - our 'local' beach, always deserted :rolleyes: They're going to have to get used to sharing beaches and forests now

Wow! Beautiful beaches! I didn't know Scotland had such beautiful beaches! I lived there for 6 months (at Balmoral Castle which is in Aberdeenshire from memory?) and it rained every day without fail - it was supposed to be summer

Having to share beaches and parks here just means your dogs will become well socialised :rolleyes: To be honest, I don't think I have seen more than one tiff between dogs and I go to lots of doggy places. Sure there are some less responsible people around but as long as you are sensible, you can usually let your dogs have a free run somewhere.

Riverside Gardens is lovely for off leash, Lake Monger is great for onleash and there's heaps of other places .... Yokine Reserve is nice too.

Great news Ptolomy Toller glad you finally got the puppy, I have a free time till later this year and am expecting a puppy through, gee the price hike is doubled! lol

Drumbeat the qtine visit times were changed late last year I had mine in thereJuly Aug and they were five days then, just after that they changed to three days.

They feed Advance at q tine but I am sure Julia and the girls will accomodate any special requests.
