Runny Poos

Both my litters of puppies have the trots. They are 9 days and 5 days old. Both mums are on anti biotics, although one just finished her course today. However the poos didn't start until they had been on abs for a number of days. So I'm wondering if it's the abs or not since it wasn't instant. All pups are lively, gaining weight ( our biggest is over a kilo already) and feeding well so I have no other concerns. I have to go into the vets tomorrow so I will speak to them about it aswell, I guess I just wanted to know if the abs could be causing the runs. Thanks

Short answer is yes

You could ad natural yoghurt or yakult to the diet of the Mums or alternatively supplement the wee babes with a bit of this as well but if they are feeding well, I'd let the good stuff go through in Mums' milk

I had been giving natural yoghurt but probably not often enough.

Aziah, What is protexin and where do I get it from?

As I said one girl is now off the ABs so hopefully it will all clear up in no time, the other still has three days to go on them.

Ive just given a good dose of yoghurt in the girls breakfasts and I'll head in to town soon for some protexin.

Thanks

ETA: Have just googled Protexin, havent seen at my vet before so not sure if they would have it. I'll ask anyway.

Just been through this with my current litter. I think that the AB was killing all of their good bateria in their stomachs.

Protexin is a probiotic.

You can buy a tub of powder from most pet suppliers, our local Petbarn stock it - I think that its around $50.

Just mix up a paste (consitency of toothpaste) and wipe some in each of their mouths.

I did this morning and night for 3 days and my guys were back to normal.

Well Ive been into my vets, they only had protexin powder in little 2gm sachets, so they have given me the lot as that was all they had, said they would get more in by tomorrow.

Thanks Aspyre, I wasnt sure how I was going to put the powder in their mouths, lol. I'll give it a go now

Thanks everyone for your advice.

I would imagine their gut is sensitive and not feeling a whole lot of wonderful at the moment, have you started them on the protexin? I used the sachet once, mixed in a small amount of water and drew it up into a syringe and gave them about 1mL each twice a day.

I have started them on the protexin. With Kijanas litter i made it into a paste and put it on my finger but that was a whole lot of messy so I did what you do and watered it right down so I could syringe it in for Kalais' litter and that was much better. Kalais' litter doesnt seem as bad, not as much groaning and less pooing but still runny when they do. She is the one that has stopped the ABs so hopefully they will come good soon. Kijana has 3 days of ABs to go and her babies are just crying and groaning and pooing everywhere and rolling in it. So much fun, lol. Doesnt help when Kijana isnt really that keen on cleaning them up. She has a go every now and then but it doesnt last. Typical of her though, she's a little snobby princess, much too good for that kind of thing :)

Kijana's litter should settle down soon, might take a couple of days for the Protexin to really help them out since they seem the most affected.

I can't imagine having them rolling in it and her being princess is much fun for you!

Just a note about protexin - I haven't used it myself but other threads on here have suggested that it is completely ineffective if given in conjunction with ABs?

I do realise it's the Mums on ABs but will it still be effective under the circumstances?

Instructions that I have say not to give with AB's but you can give straight after. Doesn't say anything about if mum is on AB's. I brought a bottle of it with a pump so it is a liquid already made up and it seemed to work faster than the powders and you only need one pump squire into the mouth.

On every occassion I have used the liquid the poos began to get better the same day. I keep a bottle in the frig always now and have used it on my adults with running bellies and also on dogs that have just finished AB or have suffered some stress. I have Rottweilers and have found it to be a great product

Cheers

It's no different if you're giving yoghurt - the AB's wipe out any effect...

I have always given it to babies whos mother is on AB's with pleasing results :p
