Possible illegal dogfights

A NORTH Queensland woman fears a brutal dogfighting syndicate is operating in the region.

Family pet Herbie, a staffordshire terrier, was stolen from the woman's home at Edmonton on Tuesday and found later that day with serious puncture wounds to his chest.

Herbie died soon after and his owner, and authorities, believe he may have been pitched into an illegal dogfight.

The dog's owner, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal, said "nearly every bone in the front of Herbie's body was smashed". She said Herbie's cruel death was "sickening" and "heartbreaking".

"We are all devastated and for people to come into our home, take him and do this for kicks and money ... it is sickening," she told The Cairns Post.

"There have been signs up around the neighbourhood of people looking for their missing staffys and I'm concerned that our dogs have been involved in illegal dogfighting."

Cairns Regional Council confirmed Herbie's injuries "related to a fight".

"The vet confirmed to council officers that the dog appeared to have been attacked by a larger dog," a council statement said.

The blood sport where dogs are pitted against each other in a savage duel exists in the Far North, RSPCA Queensland says.

Rural and remote areas - including the Tableland and Cape - are rumoured to have underground dogfighting networks.

It's hard to imagine anyone getting their kicks out of watching such cruelty. A normal person just cannot understand it. These poor dogs. These people are not normal human beings, to see such suffering and enjoy it is beyond my comprehension. I hope they catch these people and throw the book at them and rescue the dogs that have endured so much. Even if the dogs have to be pts, it surely is a better outcome than what they are going through now.
