Zug Zug
I have the same trouble with my bichon. I'm going to get some Angel's Eyes and see how that works. Will this make a difference to the dicolouration around his chin also, or just around the eyes?

Loving my Oldies
CW EW, Mufti's very own thread: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=192107
Loving my Oldies
One of the reasons I like Optrex is that dogs get dust and muck in their eyes as well and they end up liking having their eyes washed. I don't even use the Optrex all the time; I regularly wipe their eyes with cotton wool balls soaked in just warm water.
GardenofEden
Well, this thread has been invaluable! My darling maltese, Biancha, has had tear stains ever since she was a wee pup and she is now 9 years old. I have tried just about everything and nothing has worked so I will be sure to add tomato paste and Optrex to my shopping list. Cannot wait. It would be a godsend to see my lovely biancha live up to her namesake, lol.
Bubitty
It might go away by itself overtime CW EW. Bitty came home with two giant tear stains and they just disappeared within a month. One thing I did was I always made sure to keep her eyes dry and wiped away any moisture with some cotton (not too close to the eye).
GardenofEden
Emmy has tear stain around her eyes and mouth. It's not bad or anything, the vet said that it's normal and Emmy is 100% healthy, but is there a way of me to get rid of them? it's not as dark as this anymore though (this was taking at 9 weeks old) but the stain is still there. It just dawned on me that if Emmy is still in her puppyhood stage she may simply be teething and that can cause tear staining and once she has stopped teething the staining may be resolved. I once had a japanese spitz and the same applied to him; he had tear stains during teething and then it all stopped as he matured.

And to be honest, I just haven't been able to afford to get some more....tomato paste next on my shopping list! I get it locally for $32 & it lasts about 2 months so works out about $4 a week initially, after 3 months you cut it down, Well worth it.
t-time
Thanks Christina But I was using it for more than one dog hence the big expense Should've explained that in my last post On the Optrex note, I wash faces with contact lens solution - just another hint
W Sibs
Thanks for everyone's suggestion! GardenofEden - my breeder said the same thing. She said, give it time. I didn't want to try Angeleyes till it was absolutely necessary because it is pricey. Tomato pastes, apple cider vinegar and Optrex is on the the list to try first. becks
Thanks Christina But I was using it for more than one dog hence the big expense :D Should've explained that in my last post On the Optrex note, I wash faces with contact lens solution - just another hint hope you mean the saline and not the lens cleaner as that really hurts if you get it in your eye. t-time
Actually, I do mean the lens solution It's a brand that humans can use to go straight from lens cleaner solution into eyes - however, I only do the staining with it. Excellent for stains as it has disinfectant to kill off bacteria - you should check your brands as some of them have Boracic Acid - even better for stains LOL but not good to go into the eyes. But you know what? Tomato paste sounds a lot easier! Edited June 2, 2010 by t-time
Loving my Oldies
Mufti is getting his daily dose of tomatoe paste - LOL. On the advice of an ear nose and throat specialist about 20 years ago, I started using the lens solution (Softwear I think it was called) because I getting sick constantly. I though it was the flu and turned out to be allergies to perfumes, pollens, etc. I used to sniff it to clean out my nasal passages. Brilliant and immediate results as it was a very gentle saline solution.
Loving my Oldies
Mufti is having tomato paste in his food everyday. I haven't noticed any changes yet, but then he has stopped biting his bottom - thank goodness. He enjoys it too. I probably put about two teaspoons in just one of his meals, either breakfast or dinner.
Stitch
I am currently trying Angels Eyes on my old girl who has not only had staining around the eyes but also staining around the mouth and a very bad breath for quite a while now. I have tried everything plus she had a dental recently with extractions and the specialist dental vet said there was nothing that could be done to improve her breath and that it was the type of bacteria she had which was causing the problem. I can honestly say that after finishing one small container of Angels Eyes the improvement is SOOO great that I am happy to have her breath on me now - and that is saying something!!! The staining around the eyes has gone and the mouth staining has vastly improved. Yes, it is an expensive product BUT IT WORKED and lets face it, one vet consultation is expensive too and usually costs the best part of $100!!! I am hopeful that after a few months on Angels Eyes (the full treatment totalling approx. $100) that I can stop using it and hopefully the mouth bacteria that was causing the problem will be changed and that it won't smell so bad anymore. Fingers crossed!! Edited June 23, 2010 by STITCH
