Just wondering if these are OK for dogs/puppies to eat?

Never bought before them so I'm unsure if the neck bone is one whole piece of bone or in little pieces? Saw them in the butcher today but wasn't quite sure, so thought I'd here before purchasing them

a whole neck would be fine- the neck chops are ok for tiny dogs/cats only - cos they end up with spiky bits which can be swallowed whole

I used to feed neck chops to my city cats :D One boy used to eat it all- bone included!

Ah thanks Per .. these were the chops, like a whole neck sliced into sections. The bone does feel quite large but could be pointy. So I will give them a miss!

eta - my cat would give me the evils if I tried to give her one

We give Leila both lamb "rosettes" and lamb necks (neck bone) and have since she was about 14 weeks old. We get our lamb necks and attack them into smaller bits (individual vertebrae or 2 at a time) - we get them from Swansea St Markets butcher for $3.50 or $4 a neck. I noticed he had some cut differently on the weekend but didnt have the change to grab some. We get bags of lamb rosettes from a butcher in Maddington who does them in large bags for $9 - much cheaper than coles or Swansea St butcher. They also do chicken wings in 2 kg bags.

We havent had any problems with either and Leila's eyes light up as soon as they are pulled out of the fridge. The necks keep her occupied for much longer than the rosettes although the rosettes have more meat on them.

if you are going to feed lamb necks , feed them in 3 - 6 inch pieces, the same as your feed roo tail etc.

Yep, thats about how wide they are - bigger if I cant be bothered hacking it to bits

Will see if I can find somewhere who has the neck in a whole piece. I want Badger eating bigger bones than chicken wings as he seems to think he can swollow a whole wing in one go :D

Going to try him on a lamb shank over the weekend, give them one each and sit in the garden with them reading .. while they make their "kill"

Thanks for your replies on lamb necks

I was always told not too feed weight bearing bones (eg shanks) as they were too hard and could break teeth.

I was told this with beef leg/marrow bones? My two don't get anything to do with beef.

Lamb and pork bones are off young animals, aren't that dense compared with beef. Could be ditto for veal therefore.

As for size, always bigger if in doubt/ a new style of bone for a particular dog.

A butcher who knows you may be happy to keep you whole lamb necks. I make lamb neck stew for the humans...and the chooks get the neck bone still in one piece to clean up afterwards.

I was told the same thing. We also had a vet once tell us that they got a lot of docks in with lamb neck bones stuck in their throats, probably small pieces but have never fed them for that reason.
