Shmurps
I have just been doing some reading and was wondering if anyone does any breeding back or preservation breeding? From what I gather it is a way of preserving bloodlines, and creating a better gene pool. I believe it can take some time and effort but from my understanding could be of value in the future? My OH asked me about it, said I didn't know if it was practiced. We are not breeders just curious. Posted in general as well, sorry. I don't fully understand it but look forward to any opinions? ellz
Answered in your General thread but also do some research on Lloyd Brackett.

Bisart Dobes
Brackett's Theory is one of the most famous breeding formula's in the world. Definately read his work. Another good source is Dr Carmen Battaglia - who refers back to Brackett constantly. Bracketts theory is basically - Let the sire of the sire become the grandsire of the dam. It is fascinating to read and learn genetics and modes of inheritance but to actually put it into practice and see what the outcomes are is even better. We are only up to our third generation mating - and it is a Grandson/Grandmother mating - and is essentially a mating to make a mating - in other words this litter is to produce a bitch to go back to a particular dog or our next step. It will be very interesting to see where the genetic dice fall with this litter thats for sure. But we're getting to the above.
ellz
If you haven't already, Pat Craige Trotter's book Born To Win Breed To Succeed is another good one. It explains what the "black holes" are in a pedigree and also how certain sex linked traits cannot be expressed through the opposite gender. Very interesting. gapvic
I'd be really interested to read Brackett's "Planned Breeding". I've been googling with no luck - does anyone know if it has been listed online anywhere? Or where I could purchase a copy? Many thanks!
ellz
Try googling Dr Carmen Battaglia. He may have a link to the book from his site. He quotes Brackett a lot and refers back to his theorum on multiple occasions on his website and during his talks.
Bisart Dobes
I have been trying to get it for a while now to no avail - it is out of print and most places that stock great dog books don't have it. I keep an eye on Dog Wise Books and Amazon. Good luck. A friend of mine has a copy and I keep offering more $$ each time I go there - one day . Dr Battaglia's website is www.breedingbetterdogs.com - he has a seminar in NSW in 2011 at the end of April from memory - I am going.
gapvic
Thanks! I did visit the breedingbetterdogs website and found an article about Brackett, but to be honest I found it vague and not very well written. It also didn't go into a lot of detail. Someone has PMd me a link to the book online so if the link works I'll put it here too :-)
gapvic
Thanks heaps to Jay for sending me the link to the Brackett article! Link here for anyone else interested: http://www.kristari.com/brackettplannedbreeding.pdf
