Puppy Won't Go To Toilet When Out And About

Hi

We have a 3 1/2 month old Giant Schnauzer who has been toilet trained so well when we are home. He picked it up really quickly and we have had no issues at all. Originally we needed to carry him down until he was big enough to negotiate the stairs and he quickly learned the right place to go. The problem now is that when we take him out (puppy school, short walks, days out) he doesn't go to the toilet at all.

Yesterday I took him out for a 10 minute walk up the road and back (only short walks for now) and we was rushing back because he needed to go!

Any tips/advice?

Thanks

My dog doesn't go to the toilet on his walk/run, even if we are on a long drive he waits until he is in a yard to go and only that is offlead. We drove Brisbane to Sydney at Christmas time 9 hours with nothing.

Train your pup to toilet on command :mad Then YOU can (most times) control where he /she leaves their mess.

I much prefer dogs not toileting on walks... and make sure they do so before we go anywhere .

Teaching a dog to toilet in response to a command is not too hard - just repeat the chosen word each time the dog STARTS to toilet.. and treat/praise enthusiatically.

Then , after a few times of this- use the word as soon as you take pup out to the chosen area... then madly praise as soon as the begin!

Soon , you will have a dog who will happily toilet upon you saying the words.. whether it be at home, or in another spot. :) It makes life SO much easier !

I have one that up until about 6 months ago, would never go to the toilet while on lead (she is 5) drove me mad and she got sick when i moved a few years ago with her :)

No idea what changed, but if she is busting, she will do a wee (i was so excited when it first happened ) )

Same as persephone. I trained my puppy to toilet on command but he haven't mastered it 100%. On most occasions, when i say "toilet", he will wee even if only a small amount. My puppy is only 15 weeks old so it is not that difficult to teach.

Right now, my female puppy doesn't go toilet in public (despite she is getting trained going on command)... but that's because she is too busy with everything and forget to go to the toilet.

One of ours came back to us at five months of age and simply won't toilet when on lead. The rest have been trained to toilet on command but this one simply won't do it so tends to go a whole day at a show without going, so frustrating.

Thank you for all your advice. Its nice to know that other dogs don't go when outside.

I forgot to mention that we have trained our puppy to toilet on command ("quick quick") and he does this on lead in the backyard perfect. I think after some time he will get used to it. I was just worried about him holding it all in!

Both Bonnie and Indie are almost 12months old now and no matter how long they are out on walks for there is no way either of them will go to the toilet until they are back home or visiting my inlaws(even then they will wait hrs after arriving until they just cant hold it anymore).

Sorry to hijack thread,

But our pup wont go either on a walk and I think it is WONDERFUL - For now!

What does get me is how to solve the little yellow patches on the grass. Can you eliminate them or mix her water with something?

The other things is when and WHERE she poos (for lack of a better term)! She poos in one spot ALL THE TIME that we dont want her to!! We try to catch her and run her to the spot we want her to, but during the day its hard.

Dont want to tell her off when she's in the wrong spot and have her think not to poo!

We praise her when she goes 'puddles', but not on que yet! Should it take long? Border Collie pup - Picked up sit, come, wait very easily!

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
